I am going to fing a way to buy the X-15 Cascade Ribbon mic before 4/21/07.
Stereo mic.. lots of extras... I think it is worth it. Seems better than
a Nady which has thicker ribbon.
Any opinions before I do it?
I am convinced that the sound I am yerning comes from ribbon mics.

Based on his statement of: "I am convinced that the sound I am
yerning comes from ribbon mics.", I would say that he's
convinced because he still hasn't found what he's looking for
and the only thing he hasn't tried yet is a ribbon mic.

You got it Neil.
Looking for smoothness, warmth.
When I listen to recordings done with ribbon mics I can hear
a very distinguishable quality.
It just seems more pleasent to the ear.
Emotion seems to convey better.
There is an intimate quality that I don't hear with other mics.
Yes, a quality I have not been able to achieve with coil or condensors.
I have never tried a ribbon.

I'm picking up (I think) and SE Electronics ribbon soon. I've been working
with a borrowed Royer. Ribbons _do_ have something a little special about
them in some situations. One thing to remember, though, is that since by
definition they're figure eight mics you have to worry about your room sound
even more than usual. In a place like Deej's, where early reflections and
general room ambiance can be managed pretty actively, it's one thing. Jammed
into a 12x14 room with low ceilings (sadly, where I am tracking now) that
can be a real problem.

Let us know what you find out, those prices sure are right.

I don't think you will be unhappy with the sE ribbon. It's one of those
*gonna' havta' pry it outta' my cold dead hands* mics around here. I also
picked up another AKG C460B/CK61 the other day. I just love these
things........more than Neumann KM184's....and they're cheap on EBay. I'll
be sending one of them off to Jim Williams for *the mod* in a month or so, I
think. I'm also scout some CK63ULS capsules for these. I like using SDC's
with hypercardiod capsules under the snare and on the hats.

My sE ribbon smooths the top without overly darkening it. I prefer this kind
of rolloff to using EQ.

Jim williams pretty much guts the C460's and makes them a bit minimalist. I
have heard them compared to the high end Shoeps mics. I am going to give him
one to do and then compare it to the stock models and see what if any
difference and/or wonderfulness I hear. I't a $150.00 gamble, but I had Jim
mod my Lexi LXP-1 and I liked the result.

I think so too, but I bought that other guitar amp so I'm feeling a little
guilty about the money I'm dropping on gear.

One other question. Ever done overheads M-S mic'd using a condenser and a
ribbon? Is that 'three Magma chassis crazy' or intriguing. I ask because
one of the uber golden ears classical engineers I know from Yale does spaced
omnis when he knows the room but M-S when he has to set up quick in a new
room. He walks around until he finds what he thinks sounds the best and sets
up there.

What did he do to your LXP-1 & how much? I use one of them dinosaurs with
my mini-live rig-it's small & old but still sounds great, but hey, if it
can sound better...

I've done M-S for overheads with 2 condensers (Microtech Gefell umt70s),
and with 2 ribbons (Beyer m130 and m160), but not both types together in
M-S. It might be an interesting sound.

M-S buys you the ability to control your width and ambience after the
fact, which can be really great. Plus, it's totally mono compatible
(though you'd better make sure you like the sound of your M, because
that's all you'll get in mono). You should make sure you can monitor a
decoded stereo signal (try Voxengo's free plugin), but record only the
M-S so you can change it later.

M-S can also sound great on piano... and lots of other things. You can
also experiment using an omni mic for the M.

I will. I'm thinking about it for a couple of reasons. One is that I love
the sound of the old James Brown drums, and they were mono until well into
the eighties. One overhead, kick and snare. So I'm thinking I should spend
my time getting that M mic in exactly the right place so in theory the drums
could be mono. Then the S decoded mic comes in when everyone else in the
band tells me the drums sound awful ;-)

I also have a pair of these, modded by Jim Williams, with all three of the
capsules. I agree that they sound fantastic. The modified body also works
very well with the Blue lollipop capsule (you need an adapter to match the
threads). This is said to be modeled to sound like the C12, and while I
can't make that comparison, it does sound in the family, as it very much
resembles my C414EBs with the brass caps.
