I have a 5042 on the way that I picked up at a good price...
will report back once I have a chance to try it out.

I'll send you, or post, a clip of mix with & without it once
I get familiar with it.

It's gonna round things a bit and "broaden/deepen" your soundstage without
you losing the center. Very subtle. Follow it up with Elephant
;o)

OK, I just got it in tonight & was just playing with it a bit,
and my initial impressions are confined to four simple
words...

Oh. My. Fucking. GAWD. !!!

Holy shit, no kidding - I have NEVER heard anything like this.
This might be one of those "magic box" kinds of things, like
the Bedini B.A.S.E., but even better in the digiworld, perhaps.

I need to play with it some more, but holy shit, I am very
impressed from the initial toying about with it. I don't even
notice any high-end veiling, which I was really worried about
considering the 15k rolloff - it's a very gentle treatment way
up there, apparently. Either it's not doing much in that
range, or it's doing something quite pleasing that doesn't
bother me one bit - at least so far.

Hey Neil, I've heard similar results
with Portico 5042..

I've been looking at the HEDD 192 unit. But, I must admit, you can get similar
results with just using Paris as a summing mixer.

No, Lamont that's NOTHING like what the 5042 does... I've tried
the Paris-as-summing-mixer thing too, remember?

Hehehe!!!!!.........so why don't you tell us what you really think? I'm =

Strap one of the channels across the output of a preamp when you're
tracking a singer or guitar and dial in some major "vibe" when you're
tracking.

I actually need 6 x of these so I can have one channel of 5042 across every
mic that is tracking a drum kit.......errr.............well....... for that
price, I could probably buy a Studer........but then I would have to
maintain it and buy tape.

;o)

Crap, I can't post any comparison clips of it right now,
because I can't figure out how to bypass external EFX
without having it mute everything. I was going to an A/B thing
& automate the bypass, but when it bypasses, it disconnects the
loop, and all audio disappears!

What am I doing wrong Deej? You've messed with external EFX in
Cubase more than I have - any ideas?

Neil

OK, so this a song clip with & without the Portico Tape
Simulator. I automated the bypass so that when I rendered the
file it would insert & bypass the Portico in each different
section, for comparision purposes.

Now, this unit does NOT have an output control, it has an input
drive/gain (which you have to optimze in order to drive the
device at a certain level), and a Tape Saturation knob, and
that's it as far as anything resembing a level control, so I
was not able to achieve a "unity gain" scenario during the
bypass vs. insert process. I even tried automating the 2-buss
gain to drop a bit when the Portico was inserted, but you could
still hear a difference - IOW, it's pretty apparent where the
Portico kicks in, and there's no way to make this a scientific
test, or if so, it would be really time-consuming to do so...
so FUCK IT! LOL This is for your edification & demonstration
purposes only... how's that? :D

By the way, the saturation setting on this example is only at
about a quarter of the way up... so it can indeed saturate more
than what you're hearing, and frankly, I think I might back it
off a tad bit from this examples settings in most cases... this
setting just just seemed like a good place where you could hear
the effect without it being overdone. The "tape speed"
emulation is set at 15ips (7.5 starts rolling off too early for
my taste). There is no 30ips - according to someone I talked to
at Rupert Neve Designs, that setting would have so little
effect as to be negligible, so they didn't include it.

High-rez mp3 link is below:

And public thanks once again the guys in DiMakina for giving me
permission to use their tunes freely in demos like these.
