Not a bad idea (the burro bit), but one thing that always blows my mind is
that developed nations assume developing nations will do what the developed
world wants automatically. I mean, look where the oil and natural gas is.
Nigeria, the Persian Gulf, Central Asia, and more and more is being found
in Brazil to add to the huge reserves in Venezuela. You work in that business,
the Saudi national oil company is more corrupt than Mexico or Brazil by multiples,
it supports a far, far more repressive and decadent regime with its profits,
and it is every bit a nationalized oil monopoly. We're cozy as lice with
them, but when Chavez decides to be a nationalist and demand more money for
the oil they happen to have, I figure that's their right. We're energy junkies
(as is western Europe), and if the price of a fix goes up either we pay the
dealer of start to sweat and scratch a lot.
But I like the burro idea,
