Hey,
First of all, thank you all for the responses to "OK, what about this
then . . . " That was helpful and oddly encouraging. I am convinced to
leave our trusty Paris rig alone, except for maybe 'nother card, more RAM,
new HD. Maybe.
But here's another question: Suppose hypothetically that a person, such
as myself, had a spare Paris system minus computer stored in a closet.
Suppose further that this person, who we assume to be very good and kind,
wanted to attach all this to a computer and have her very own Paris
recording system. What would the best possible options for this
hypothetical computer be? And how challenging to find the necessary
elements?
Thank you in advance. :)

Sarah-
for the mostest barest bonesest Paris system all you need is:
1)an EDS card (what are these now? something like $200?)
2)an interface (a 442 for $50 will work)
3)a computer
4)some headphones
5)some sort of preamp-thing
6)a microphone
7)cords to connect these items
8)you
I have such a system sitting right next to me right now. Works fine.
Check the for sale paris page for the paris stuff for sale.

Operating system-Windows ME
Motherboard-ASUS A7V8X-LAN
CPU-AMD Athlon XP3000
RAM-2 x 512MB sticks of Corsair XMS DDR PC 133
BIOS Rev 1.03 (I think this is the one..is the second to last bios that was
issued for thei mobo...the last bios is a POS.....stay away)
Get yourself a nice Seagate Barracuda 7200 RPM IDE drive for your system
drive and a 250GB Seagate Barracua for your audio.
It will be stable as a rock as long as you don't go trying to make it
perform unnatural acts with newer plugins that aren't compatible.
I've got a bunch of old DX plugins here here that will work great with Paris
and a windows ME operating system if you want to give this a go.

Wow, a complete recipe! Thanks. So, is this stuff I can get at my local
computer nerd parts store, or do I need an antique technology store? And
what's Windows ME?
Oh never mind, I can look all this stuff up. Hey, if you run two EDS
cards, do you also use to C-16s, cuz that'd look pretty cool. :)
Thank you doctor,

Artguy,
I have all the Paris bits . . . got most of 'em from this crazy mad
scientist guy down in Colorado or someplace. Just wondering about the best
computer options. But thanks.

Sarah-
Now that I reread your post, I see that you already have the Paris stuff.
Ah well. Onward.
I know DJ said to go get such and such motherboard and ram some sort of magic
amulet and who knows what else.
I went to craigslist and got an old cheap mac G4 that runs os 9.2 and set
that up. No muss, no fuss.
I also set up an XP windows machine. A bit more muss, a bit more fuss. But
it also works fine.
Why he's steering you towards windows ME is something only he and his giant
dogs can tell you.
;)

So you're saying that Paris runs on XP, but just with a bit more muss and
fuss? And is it continuing muss and fuss, or once you've mussed and fussed
it's done?

If you're going to run Paris on Windows, my experience (which is/was
considerable) was that windows ME was the best of the bunch as far as
operating systems for stability and performance.

Sarah and DJ,
Don't forget the native plugins. That's a large
part of the mixing beauty of Paris. What's the=20
usability of brand new VST plugs with windows ME ?
I'd do XP unless multiple ADAT cards were crucial.
It will keep your system one OS (operating system)=20
back rather than two.
Sarah's album is stellar.
Tom
Sarah PS: Windows ME is a stable but much older operating system=20
than Windows XP which is now older than the newest Windows Vista
which is difficult for many DAWs at this point. Paris is a no go with =

Well, we don't need no steenkin' ADAT cards . . . got no steenkin' ADATs =
anyhow. Just a simple one (maybe two) card Paris setup with a coupla =
8-in cards.
Thanks,

Sarah and DJ,
Don't forget the native plugins. That's a large
part of the mixing beauty of Paris. What's the=20
usability of brand new VST plugs with windows ME ?
I'd do XP unless multiple ADAT cards were crucial.
It will keep your system one OS (operating system)=20
back rather than two.
Sarah's album is stellar.
Tom
Sarah PS: Windows ME is a stable but much older operating system=20
than Windows XP which is now older than the newest Windows Vista
which is difficult for many DAWs at this point. Paris is a no go with =
Vista.

And=20
what's Windows ME?
Oh never mind, I can look all this stuff up. Hey, if you run two =
EDS=20
cards, do you also use to C-16s, cuz that'd look pretty cool. :)
Thank you doctor,
Sarah

As far as I can see, my native insert VST plugins are working in both
WinME/WinXP when using "Chainer" and VST/dx adapter 3.3. Some of the
plugins are pretty new but from trusted firms like Voxengo, Kjaerhus,
PSP and Crysonic.

Erling,
That's good to know. How about the newer UAD versions?

Tom, I don't use UAD anymore with Paris, so I don't know. Only using
it with Cubase 4 and Adobe Audition 3 on WinXP with an AMD X2 6000+
processor that I have just build.

You're going to need ADAT cards if you ever want to digitally interface =
Paris with any other system.....and eventually, if you've got a Pro =

Sarah and DJ,
Don't forget the native plugins. That's a large
part of the mixing beauty of Paris. What's the=20
usability of brand new VST plugs with windows ME ?
I'd do XP unless multiple ADAT cards were crucial.
It will keep your system one OS (operating system)=20
back rather than two.
Sarah's album is stellar.
Tom
Sarah PS: Windows ME is a stable but much older operating system=20
than Windows XP which is now older than the newest Windows Vista
which is difficult for many DAWs at this point. Paris is a no go =
with Vista.

Erling,
Well that sounds sweet! Do you run the UA live during Paris mixes?
I was wondering if that would work for me. Then I would put the UAD
in my Cubase rig also. If so how do you deal with the auto latency
comp in Cubase to/from Paris?
By the way Cubase 4 ver 4.1 is out.

Tom, I'm using different computers for Paris and Cubase/Audition. I
found out that there wasn't so much difference between UAD plugs and
quality VST plugs in Paris, so for my simple use, the UAD card found
its place in the new computer, only to be used with
Cubase4.1/Audition3 and Paris is using VST inserts.
