Buddy of mine just got a new computer: AMD 64 dual-core processor, 2GB RAM,
500GB HDD. He's wondering about what audio software might work. Reaper
looks like it has a write for Vista. Has anyone tried Reaper under Vista,
and if so, how is it running?
THanks,
MR

HI Mike,
Is he using Vista 32bit?
If so then these I know will all work.

Reaper
Steinberg Cubase
Cakewalk Sonar 6
Samplitude 9.1

If he is using 3rd party effects or VSTi plug ins that where it get more
gray.

Also very few sound cards have reliable Vista drivers even though many
say they have Vista support. The only ones I've used that have driver
that perform at least close to XP drivers are the MOTU and RME and Lynx
stuff.

If he is on tight budget I would recommend that he buy and OEM copy of
XP and install that instead.:)
Pick up a SATA removable drive bay and put the OS drive in that then he
can just swap between his Vista general OS and his XP audio OS install.

All the audio software and hardware will work that way and he wont have
to worry about the OS's messing with each other. He will have allot more
choices with audio interfaces especially the cheaper ones.
Chris

Hey Chris,
Thank you very much for the reply. Man, I hadn't considered the driver and
plug in issue. This fella has a couple of P4 machines. I don't think his
projects will get over eight tracks, so we should be good to go.
Take care!
MR

HI Mike,
If he's gonna have so few tracks in a project then I'd say use the older
P4 machine with XP. He should be able to get allot more than eight
tracks with effects. I would looks at the M-Audio Delta series cards.
Reaper works really well on slower machines. If he has no outboard mixer
and need mic pres then I would get a TI chipset firewire card and pick
up one of the boxes from Presonus, Focusrite TC Electronic or M-Audio. I
would only get the smaller I/O units (8 channels or under) they will use
less resources.
