With Digi it's more like $100 and $1000 - ing.
Nickel and diming, isn't that when you rebuild and update your MSWindows
box every three to six months? ;^)
Apple, I dunno. At this point you should be able to get a couple of
years out of the investment at least. That's a fast enough box out of
the, uh, box. Just add a couple RAM sticks. It even has a removable HD
setup from the getgo, so swap out client drives as needed.
Of course there's the OSX update next year (full 64 bit) but at probably
be half the cost of the upcoming MSWindows update.

Leave?? who said anything about... hey, wait a minute... you
folks aren't going to kick me out are you??? ;-)
The plan is to knock the Paris rig in the main studio down
to a 2 card, 2 MEC system, and roll it back to ME for ease
of adat I/O. The Nuendo machine will end up with the Magma
for the two 95652 cards and the UAD's. The HD rig will have
48 analog in (plus digital) and 24+ analog and digital outs.
The whole mess will be tied into the DM2K and I will be
able to route anything to anything... very DJ-esque, don't
you think? ;-) The DM also has a remote layer for ProTools,
so I should be able to toggle between controlling Nunedo and
Protools on the same session. One I get it running, I'll
post up some info on routing. I shouldn't have to turn away
anything work-wise by the time it's done.
The remaining Bundle III's (5 of them) will be spread around
the facility, keeping some stuff for spares.
Paris ain't goin' anywhere here!

LOL. Upgrade? Nah, except memory perhaps (that's what I keep forgetting to
do...hmm, kind of ironic). Build? About every 2 years usually for me at
least, which is about the same for most any computing platform, including my
brain, which is due for an update pretty soon. I need to be able to keep up
with my 5 yr old.
MacPro - isn't that an oxymoron? ...considering that you can make home
movies, and listen to music, and make photo albums....and make home movies,
and listen to music, and, and, ummm...and...umm...so it's a combo vcr/slide
projector/boombox! Yep, you see those in pro studios all the time. ;-)
Okay, sure, Windows machines can run time warping games ("What do you mean
it's Friday?!? I missed a week of work?!?!") and legal viruses, such as
Norton, MacAfee, etc. Everyone needs those. Like a broken leg.
David - best of luck with HD3, and you have our sympathies.
Hey if it gets clients and pays the bills, I say go for it and enjoy it.

Do yourself a favor and use one MEC to take stems off the ProTools :)

The use of "Pro" or "Professional" in a product name always struck me as
too obvious. Bang them over the head with it!
The "P" in PARIS stands for Professional. That's bad enough, but then
came PARIS Pro. Yikes, redundantly obvious. If you can't continue to
develop a product, stick another "Pro" on the end.
Maybe we'll yet see an upgrade to "PARIS Pro Professional," which will
be the same but red.
The Mac Pro it's more likely to be bought for professional use than the
other Mac models based on features and price. But I still like
"PowerMac" better as a name. Mmmm, POWER!
My PowerMac is a combination slide rule/sandwich maker. Deej's
Frankenbox is a combination easy bake oven/time soak. Your box sounds
like a combination back scratcher/contemplater. We all get what we want,
want a sandwich?

On the plus side, ProTools is better now than it was when PARIS was
young. But so are some other worthy choices.

Sounds like a lot of good choices, actually... Paris will probably
still find a way to make itself useful within all that flexibility you
have there...
It should be interesting to see your report on how this all comes
together -- looking forward to that... Good luck with it, and keep us
posted...

I think it's more the expectation of things like Vocalign and Amp Farm and
Pitch'n'Time and Groove Detective (or whatever it's called) that make people
want PT. Also, many musicians around here (Washington, DC metro area) seem
to be PT savvy enough to sit at the computer and do some of the work. Most
of my clients just want to play music and leave the computing to me, but
I'm beginning to feel the pinch of not being able to automate plugins, or
to use many of the new FX that are coming out.
I'm dying to use the Waves IR-L reverbs and the UAD-1 Neve EQ, both of which
I own, but neither of which work in Paris on my OS 9 Mac. I just bought
a MOTU 828 in hopes that I can accomplish a DJ-ish outboard FX computer w/
my old G4. We shall see!

Hey Gantt,
I think you're right. The ability to use plugs that won't run in Paris, and
the automation features other DAWs offer are real compelling reasons to look
for alternatives. And, as Dave seems to be pointing out, my ears and sonic
expectations are not what I have to sell to. In fact I'm also working on
another DAW (on a G4 in fact!) and trying to integrate this with Paris.
