Hey Jamie, on the software front, Motu can't compete with Apple's giveaway
pricing of Logic Studio. Let's be honest, DP's main user base is the Hollywood
composer crowd. Not enough to keep up with Apple's onslaught.
Competition is good for any industry, but it seems that like most industries,
"consolidation" is the name of the game.

Don't forget that Nuendo 4 (now shipping) and Cubase 4.1 (coming soon) are
also competing on Intel/PPC Macs.
DP and Logic aren't alone there.
Jamie - side bar question, is Logic 8 now completely Cocoa, or is it still
Carbon?

Sure they can.
MOTU has a great sequencer that was already priced at $500 long before
Apple came down to that price.
MOTU has some very capable software instruments and they work with
anyone's sequencer including Logic and DP.
And MOTU has dependable, workhorse i/o hardware.
MOTU can sell hardware/software bundles with DP, and they can sell
instrument and hardware add-ons that work with any sequencer. A lot of
the basic R&D costs should be recouped by now, they are in a good
position to build from the solid tech base they have achieved.
Cheers,

True. And Live and a few others. Choice is good.

I haven't heard. I still haven't even had time to install Logic 8. Just
finished another project on Logic 7...maybe next week I'll have time to
install the upgrade.

A lot more people use DP than you think. The Mac side needs to maintain choice,
other wise people will say that there is no Audio software for the Mac.
Stupid people would listen and abandon the platform. There is not one size
that fits all, people like choice.
I thought they should have bought Steinberg, MOTU over Emagic, but hey, it's
all history now. By the way have you seen Apple stock prices lately? They
must have made some right choices. I wish I would have listen to myself
and bought when they dipped below $14.00 a share. The stock has split at
least once or twice since then. Oh well.

I agree with you about Motus status, but DP is not a big seller. Too often
yo hear that :
-User interface is too busy
-midi first
-clucky audio editing.
I own DP4 and have it on a G4 and while it's avery capable seqencer with
great features like Polar and such, I just think that more composers prefer
Logic's Sequencer for midi composing. Then, on the audio side, we like sleek,
fast, audio recording and editing aong with mixing.
DP is not in the league with Neundo,Pro Tools in that department. So, yes,
they have a winner with their stellar hardware...But, on the software side,
I don't know ..Tough call there

Really nichey product. Small niches.. "A lot more people use DP than you think"
Your average DAW consumer does not go to their GC, Sam Ash etcand ask for
DP..Rather Pro Tools (LE, M-Powered) Cubase SX, Logic Audio..Abelton Live..Acid
Pro, Sonar
I hope they re-invent it's DP like Logic Audio 8, and come up with a user
interface that's not so busy.. Take the Nuendo/SX & Protools Approach which
is the 2 screen first (Audio arrange/Mixer)..Then, toggle your way into the
Midi and other stuff..Just like Logic 8 has.
If not, their market share will continue to shrink. What DP does, no other
DAW does. The tools that are embedded in that app is just plain stupid!!
Conducter/arrange track, Polar and many others.. They just have to find
away to stream line and dare I say, dumb it down a bit.

You should upgrade to DP 5.x, there were some great improvements around 4.5
through 5.0.

Well, everybody's got an opinion, mine is that DP 5 is pretty slick in it's
own right. At one time DP was one of the top softwares in professional studios.
A lot of guys still use it. Sweetwater for one, still pushes DP pretty
hard.
I would call DECK a niche DAW, but not DP, there are still many users. Remember,
DP is a Pro App, there are guys that can do anything with DP that any other
DAW can do.
All these companies leapfrog each other with features. DP has had features
that some DAWs had only recently gotten around to. There is a possibility
that DP will now create PC versions due to Apple's move. I wouldn't count
MOTU out just yet, just like I wouldn't count out Sony/SonicFoundry, or CakeWalk.

Apple had one 2:1 split in early 2005, so if you bought the stock before
then (say in the high 20's) the current share price should be doubled, so
you've had a 10x return in less than three years. It's also trading at 44x
earnings right now, while HP, Dell, and MSFT are trading at less than half
of that, so you have to be a real believer in future growth to be a buyer
today. However, I wish I had every penny of my money in AAPL since Jan 1
2005, even if I can't stand their operating systems.

I sure wouldn't buy in at the top. What goes up must come down, eventually.
Well, at least you admit you can't stand Mac OSX. The Question is why!
You don't need to answer that.

I've been very open about why I don't like OS X, and why I really don't like
Vista, so I don't have to 'admit' anything.
