Steve,
My mobile set-up is a Focusrite Saffire running the included Cubase SE
software on a 1.67 G4 PowerBook. I only use the line inputs of the Saffire,
and I've heard a lot of people don't like the mic pres in this unit. If you
want decent mic pres, you might research some of the other Firewire
interfaces out there. Also, the Saffire will only record 4 inputs
simultaneously and that's using the SPDIF inputs additionally. Anyway, I
record 24 bit .wavs in Cubase and convert them to 24 bit .paf's with and old
version of SonicWorx. Long story short, PARIS on a Mac laptop would be a bit
cumbersome for mobile recording, but any good Firewire interface and your
laptop should get you good results, and the file transfers to PARIS aren't a
big deal.

Maybe Garage band and a simple firewire 2 ch mic pre w/phantom? I do have
a small 4 ch. headphones amp. I rarely would have to go more than 2 ch at
a time on location, if so, they can just pay for full rig set-up. I am still
open to anyone elses setup....

You might be referring to my old setup, as I think I was probably the first around here if I remember correctly to go this route back in the day. I had a Dell PC Laptop with a magma 4 slot PCMCIA running 4 EDS cards. I had an external 7200 rpm drive in the laptop, as well as an external firewire drive. All running on Win XP.
I used that for a couple years with no big problems to speak of at all.
Cheers,
TC

Well, I missed this on several counts didn't I? Sorry for the bad memory
chips on my end.. yes, I think you were the dude with the brass monkeys to
try this deviant experiment. And kudos to you for it.
A Question TC, if you would be so kind.. did you have power supply noise
issues on your Dell, and what model/year?
I've had loads of problems with keeping my 4 year old Dell Inspiron8000 out
of buzz/hum mode, wondering if you knew some secret sauce for what I `think`
to be a ground / filtering problem inherent to dell laptop supplies. Battery
is quiet as a mouse.. A/C brings all kinds of problems I can't seem to get
rid of.
