Hi folks. "What computer configurations does PARIS work well with?" has long been an FAQ here. Mike's multi-core drivers have opened up many new potential configurations, which has made that an even more urgent question.

My skills haven't been up to creating such a database in a way that would make the info easily entered and easily sorted. But the infrastructure to (relatively) easily create such a database finally dropped into my lap this week, so now the work begins.

So now I need to know - what do we reckon we want included?

Also - since the database won't be smart enough to read text and turn it into meaningful entries - we should constrain the possible range of answers to fixed answers whenever possible (and leave room for expansion of the fields too), so how do we want it entered?

Here's a start I made, and I hope you folks can help me refine it before we put it into action and start gathering info.

============================================

1) Motherboard - (text entry)
2) Model - (text entry)
3) Chipset - (text entry)

26) Drivers (radio button) - stock / original XP / Mike Audet multicore XP

27) Overall satisfaction with this combo - (radio button) scale of 0-5

============================================

Not all fields will be "required" fields - they just have to be there in case people want to use them. Let me know what else you think is required or that you think we should give folks the option of including, or anything you think is unnecessary.

Looks pretty comprehensive to me although you might want to ad what other audio cards have you on your MB, i.e. UAD 1 / UAD 2 etc.

Not all of us have expansion chassis

OK, here's a rough first draft of the database interface. PLEASE don't hit "send", no data will get recorded - this is just a test of the concept of the entry form (I've already spotted a few problems that will be addressed in rev 2) because it's not hooked up to a database yet.

It kinda looks like it looks for now, I'll worry about "pretty" later.

Next step after we refine this is to figure out how to display and sort the data we gather.

You can get your BIOS info from your PC at bootup by holding down a key combination (which I forget and hope someone else will contribute here). But BIOS won't be a required question. Only a few of the questions will require an answer, the rest will be "if you happen to know" or "if you feel like answering". Of course, the more info we have the more useful the database will be.

Nice, Rob. I'll expand that to also include sync *within the same box*, ie running PARIS and Cubase on the same rig.

OK, note the new entries at 19 to 19e. I'm not happy with that way of getting at the info - there must be a more elegant way to ask the questions so we get info we can sort and use. Any ideas before I make a new revision? Your input options are:

- radio button: check one entry (ie yes/no/dunno) from multiple choice list
- check box: check one *or more* entries from multiple choice list
- drop down select: select one entry from multiple choice dropdown

(text boxes or text entry should be saved for absolute last resort since it's much harder to sort and search raw text).

Just ask "what will *I* be looking for when I upgrade my own current PARIS rig, and how will I want to see it presented?"

Hey Kerry, another suggestion for the database would be a detail or even a copy of the Paris.cfg file. I'd be very curious to see other system configs for comparison.

Nice idea - I actually have an "upload file" function available in the template too. I'll put it in.
