Another Dumb Q about standard MEC in/out [message #72210]

How much of a sonic hit would one take uing just the MEC's I/O for recording
or bussing?

I haven't tried it and can't right now but the answer could change my
immediate plans for Paris (not that I'm going anywhere)

Seeing that the bit depth is the deal and not the sample rate you should be
fine unless you have a big signal to noise ratio need like a vocal without
gating or acoustic guitar. If you can use it for electronic keyboards and
such you'll be even better off. They are also great for queue mix outs.
Use your ears and test them. I bet you'll be plenty happy.

Of course, 16 or 24 bit has no bearing on the quality of the convertors but
I have found that the 8 in convertors are better in either format than the
other interfaces (unless you use high end down the adat pipe). However, if
you're using something like say percussion and jam the levels down paris'
throat like I do, you'll hardly notice a difference I think. Where it
becomes more apparant is in vocals and acoustic instruments, and would like
take quite a few tracks of build up to note problems. For instance, a dude
like BT wouldn't be able to live on those convertors simply because
80-something tracks would be muddy :)
Normal earthlings however could likely hit over 18 tracks w/o noticing much.
