Hi All,

I am going to be so embarrassed if I'm just mixed up about this, but I've checked and checked, and the double buffering is working! I've tried playing back about 25 tracks, and just a preliminary recording test of one track, but everything seems to be working fine, with no noticeable increase in CPU load.

What this means, unless I'm somehow deluded and this huge, exciting emotional high I'm on comes crashing down, is that a 64 bit driver is going to happen. My second attempt at working around the original DMA design is working.

Holly Crap!!!!!!!!

Shocked
I knew this car still looked good polished up...carb just needed some tweaking to perform with these newer gasoline formulas. Wink

Hey Mike

That is great. I bought your xp driver and am in the process of putting a pc system together (migrating from mac) I decided to try win 7 32 bit as others have had some success. I am excited about the prospect of moving Paris into the future!
Count me in for the new driver when it is available.
Thanks for all your hard work!

Sounds great! I'll be one of your first customers. I'm building a new i7 based computer that will become the new Paris machine. Have you tested it with greater than 4 GB of memory? And...do you believe that all old plugs we use now should operate normally?

Great work Mike! Actually, really outstanding and other-worldly!

It's no exaggeration to say that releasing this driver will be an unprecedented moment in the history of digital audio. No digital audio equipment has ever been supported for such a long time after it's been discontinued. Based on the lifecycle of Xp, there's a good chance that we'll see some working Paris systems running on Win 7 64 bit in the twenties. Cool

I'm so stoked about it, too. I called in to work on the day I was planning to spend on the driver last week, but I have done more testing with the double buffering, and I've yet to have a single problem. It's just been perfect. I can't wait to get it finished. Windows 7 64 is really, really nice.

Cheers!

Hey Mike,

I'm so happy your work has made this possible. You got me over the last multicore hurdle and now Win 7 64bit !

You are allowing my work flow to move into the next decade with all your effort. You can count me in on the next driver release by all means.

I might get another drive and install Win 7 for this upgrade. Oh ya, and get more RAM ! Cubase will be so much happier. Does Paris or it's native plugins benefit from the extra RAM ?

Thanks a million,
Tom

Thanks so much for all the positive comments here. PARIS won't benefit from more ram, but other applications that we run along side PARIS (VSTi hosts, etc.) will.

I really, really intended this to be long done by now. I'm still working on it. I've been moving functionality from the PSCL into the scherzo where the code relates to enabling and disabling interrupts. This is something that has bothered me about the driver for a long time. When I started, I was so new to things that I was afraid of changing these sections. They don't look so scary now, so I'm taking them on. The hope is that PARIS will run much faster when the interrupt masking and unmasking is done under the IRQ lock, rather than putting in delays. This could alleviate some of the clock funkiness when changing from internal to external and back again, too. Even if it turns out it fixes nothing, it is the right way to do it, so it's going to change.

I've now done dozens and dozens of hours of testing with the double buffering, and I've had zero problems. Smile

I'm sorry this has taken so much longer than I thought it would. But, I am going to finish this, and it is going really, really well. Thanks so much for your patience. I wish I was a millionaire, and I could just make this my full time gig. I'd buy the PARIS source, too. Ah, dreaming ....

We'll get there anyway.

All the best,

Mike

I guess if we are still using Paris we are really in no rush or we would have gone elsewhere. The system still out shines all the others in actual tone and fullness. So take your time you'll get there. You've already gone above and beyond and it is well appreciated. Thanks Mike for all your time and effort....Ron

Thanks so much for the kind words.

I'm actually pretty embarrassed that this hasn't been finished as soon as I would have liked. But, I'm still on it. I finished moving the IRQ masking and unmasking to the Scherzo last night.

Things are moving along well.

All the best,

Mike

Hi,
That sounds great but can I ask something that might sound naive at least ?

What are the real benefits of using Paris 64bit drivers ?

Should we build a new computer that is 64bit capable ?

Do these have PCI slots ?

Will Paris run faster ?

I would really love to know although I will totally support as I have done already by buying all plugins from Mike !

I would reeally love having My mec's running with input output cards and a another software like SAW maybe ???

What drivers should get developed for this if any different ?

Thanks for all your tries.
Regards,
Dimitrios

Maybe you should ask Mike if you could try testing his new ASIO drivers.

I've got Reaper running on top of Paris but have no real time to do any testing. It seems to work well on the playback end but can't comment on the recording end.

I'm sure Mike would appreciate your assistance is this as you're one of the more thorough diagnosticians on the forum.

Hi Dimitrios - i might be wrong, but Im not sure that moving PARIS from a 32-bit environment to a 64-bit will unlock any more features or power or inherent functionality than moving from, say, Win2k to XP would have done.

My take on this is that like the XP drivers, it's more about knowing this is where it will all be going in the very near future (a 4 gig RAM limit? It's a wonder 32-bit systems have persisted this long). One day all too soon you'll look for stuff to upgrade or even maintain your system and the 32-bit stuff will be the harder-to-find/more expensive/limited choice/unsupported stuff. Difference is, this time we're going to be ready when that day arrives.

I want to thank the fellows who are keeping Paris alive. Still dabbling after work and on weekends and such, wouldn't move willingly to a native system. It's startling how the industry hs accustomed itself to things we refused to tolerate 15 years ago, ie latency and limited track count etc. I feel the market is a giant sham right now, to a real extent.

Heck, I'm getting better sounds out of an old Yamaha TX81Z than anybody I've heard get out of all these ticky-tacky soft synths. Maybe I'm fooling myself...

Anyway, I'm buying Mike's plugins this weekend and these 64 drivers as soon as they're ready for prime time. Can maybe beta test if things are pretty close...course that would entail buying a new version of Windows, too...

This is my first post here.Hello everyone and thank you all for keeping this site and paris alive. Also want to thank Mike for the great effort.I bought a new sandy bridge pc and want to get rid of most old 32 bit stuff. The only driver i'm missing is for paris to run complete system 64 bits.I'm checking this forum every day anxiously waiting for Mike to do a miracle..best luck!!

Welcome aboard. This ain't quite the rockin' place it used to be in the Glory Days of Paris, but there are a surprising number of active users still making great mixes with the old system, and lots of modernizing going on too.

thanks for the welcome Ted.i've been working on paris since it was born in 1997 i think.nowadays i still use the converters together with creamware scope and cubase..love the sound of it..
asio drivers is another thing that'd be great but since it's presumed dead for a long time now, it's really amazing that Mike who must be a hard core passionist is still losing nights over it.His work is sure worth a lot more for the stuff he developed.
belive me,many big corporations should learn from him and such enthusiasts how to respect their customers..

Hi Mike,

your original post was written nearly 4 months ago and we didn't get much info since then. It seemed you were getting really close to finishing things off then, is it just the lack of time or some unforeseen technical issues that slowed things down? I may not be only one who's eagerly (and patiently) waiting for an update.

Endre

Hi Endre,

Thanks for being so patient. I was actually planning on posting an update today, so your post's timing is perfect.

For the last two weeks, and until it is done, I've been taking a day a week off work to spend on the driver. It just wasn't getting done otherwise. With the baby, and a busy work schedule, I just wasn't getting to work on it.

I've been enjoying the last two PARIS days enormously! I get so into it that I forget to eat. It's going really well. This week, I got the DMA buffers successfully passed back to the PSCL on Windows 7 x64. I would have got more done, but I stupidly thought it wasn't working, and I wasted untold hours trying to figure out why. But, it was working perfectly. It was the next driver step that was causing the access violation. Doh!

It's coming. The DMA buffers involved passing a user mode memory structure to the scherzo, which is more complex than most of the scherzo dispatch IO calls. And, that now works. I've got a handle on how to do the 64 to 32 bit thunking, so the next steps should come a lot faster. I'm so exited to get back to it. Maybe the next day I can spend on it will be the day I finally can post a screen shot of PARIS running on Windows 7 64. I am so looking forward to that day! It may be an extra couple of weeks. I may run into something more difficult, but I don't expect to.

I'm sorry that it has taken so long. But it is coming. I'm new to 64 bit driver programming also, so I'm learning as I go.

I've also made a lot of progress in the PSCL in terms of reducing the slowness of the XP driver. It's now just as fast as the Windows 98 driver was, which has always been a big dream of mine. I always hated that long delay when PARIS starts under XP. It's gone. I've also got rid of the microsecond timing delays that relied on cpu cycles. When RAM on the paris cards is written to, the app has to wait 10 microseconds before reading it or writing more, and with new CPUs throttling their speed up and down, relying on cpu cycles seemed like something that needed to go. The PSCL is using the high resolution timer in newer PCs now, so the CPU speed changes won't be a problem.

I'm having so much fun with this, and I'm making sure to code in the possibility of a 64 bit app. Wouldn't that be the coolest?!

I'll try to do a better job of keeping you guys posted on the progress. I am working on in.

All the best,

Mike

I will support as much as I can, as I hope that all still using their Paris systems, will do so !!

Would this driver also run on XP systems better than the other driver we already have ?

Hi Dimitrios,

Yes, the Windows XP driver is better, too. I'm still working out some of the details in the double buffering. I think I found a bug a couple of nights ago, but it will be easy to fix. I thought that 10 buffers per channel was enough, but I think you get an additional 10 needed if you are recording onto a track that already has audio in it. You think you've thought of everything, and then reality sets in...

All the best,

Mike

PS - I don't think I heard back from you about the specific error message that the ASIO driver was giving you. Let me know if I missed an email and can help.
