When I build my new console I will need to insert a patchbay into my chain.
I have heard some people complain that patchbays severly decrease quality.
Opinions on that?
Also, suggestions on good patchbays with XLR inputs and balanced 1/4 ouputs?
Thanks,
b

If any of that rack gear is class A or tube (or both) it's going to get hot,
so make sure it has a space above it and make sure your sound proof cabinet
is well ventilated (which pretty much negates the sound
proofing..........and why do you need to sound proof preamps??.........oh
well, anyway.......;O) .

The connection quality is far less with a TRS (longframe or standard
for that matter) jack than with an XLR. The XLR has a good solid
connection, whereas the 1/4" jacks can move (rotate) with vibration.
While this is not a problem with line level signals, it IS a problem
for the very low level mic signals where Phantom power in concerned.
ANY variance in the Phantom supply to a mic will be instantly audible.
I worked at a studio once that had a bantam mic bay... anytime I did
a session in there, I had to lay a blanket and phone books on the
cables to keep them from vibrating... I even spent lots of time
in-between cleaning the plugs (brass) to no avail.
YMMV... but I doubt it...
Cheers,
David.

to remind him of how important water is but also to protect the gear
from spillage when one has it on oneself...sheesh...

All my rack gear fits in one small rack unit so I would just like to shove
it all in the cabinet and forget about it.
Get it out of the way and be able to close up out of view when I need to.
