I like Christmas songs a lot, too. You've reminded me that in 1988, after
I'd recently discovered sequencing and samplers and had become a complete
midiot, I sat down with my Atari 1040 and my best friend Brenda and made a
Christmas album. It was pretty ragged, but I posted some of the better ones
here --- http://www.sarahtonin.com/christmas.htm

Hope you like 'em,

S

Is that the evil Christmas deer, stalking the hapless humans and their pets,
preparing to strike?

Thanks Sarah. I'm listening as I write this. Your arrangements go right
to it: one of the great things about xmas songs is that the melodies are
so strong that they can be orchestrated in so many different and wonderful
ways. A pleasure to listen to your music. Reminds me of my Atari days -which
were also happening in '88. I've still got my 1040, wrapped in plastic and
safetly in storage. I'm taking it with me to the fifth world.

Yes, they are. However, I do get tired of every artist releasing an
album of the same tired old chestnuts over and over and over again.
If I hear "Jingle Bell Rock" one more time, I'm going to hurt someone
badly.

However, my new favorites are "The Meaning of Christmas" and "A Song
of Christmas" by Lowen & Navarro, and "Sharing Christmas" and "A
Distant Trumpet" by The Ides of March.

I love it when artists write really good, fresh, new Christmas songs.

What synths did you use?

Very nice -- at least all that I heard until your server overloaded.

I didn't know you had those other old things online as well.

You have lots of very nice stuff. Even more than I knew...

Now don't be judgemental . . . poor deer has rabies and can't help herself.

Oh man . . . 19 years ago . . . ow . . . OK, I'll do my best. I know we had
a Yamaha TX802 and an RX5 drum machine. And there was a little tiny noisy
Roland box that we should never have used, don't remember the model. Oh,
wait . . . MT32. Ick. Then there was a borrowed sampler that I think was an
Akai S1000. I think. Might've been an Emu sumpnerother. But I think it
was the Akai. And Hybrid Arts SMPTEtrack running it all on the Atari
1040ST. I dragged my friend Brenda in to do the vocals. She'd never been
in a studio before, and was really nervous, but she did OK.

I was addicted to midi for about 5 years there, and became something of a
recluse. I've recovered now and much prefer to work with humans, in spite
of all the problems that come with them. :)

I still have my Atari, too. I even dug it out and fired it up a few years
ago so I could export all those SMPTEtrack song files as midi files to use
in Cubase.

Thanks for the compliments. The concept was to try to do each song in a
completely different style, so it was a fun arranging exercise. There were
15 songs on the original cassette release, but some will never again be
allowed out in public. :)

Thanks. My server overloaded? What does that mean? Should I worry?

It just means that more of us were trying to listen than you had
outgoing bandwidth for.

It should settle down after a while.
