I'm wondering if I will have better luck making a
quiet-enough-for-the-control-room pc with Intel or AMD. Any data on
which runs hotter these days?

Bill,

I think it's more up to the cooling systems that's available than the
CPU nowadays.
I'm using powersupplies with 120 mm slowly going fans that's giving a
noise of max 16 dBA in my systems:

To cool down the cpu, I'm also using 120 mm slowly going fans like
this with speedcontroller:
http://www.northq.dk/products/coolers/nq3312.html
This product are just giving noise from 12 dBA on the slowest speed.
Both computers (AMD 4200X2 and 4000 Athlon) are cooling very well with
the slowest speed on the fans.

Be aware that a motherboard must have enough place to use these kind
of coolers, if it's an idea to try these kind of thing.

By the way, there's oceans of nearly silent cooling systems out there
on the net. Aircoolings, watercoolings etc....

These powersupplies are using 140mm fans, not 120mm;-)

HI Bill,
In general right now the current Intels are are running cooler.
Use a 3rd party heat sink. They will better dissipate the heat with the
low rpm fans.

I agree, but with current options, they can get pretty quiet. It's a
long run to a small, hot closet for me right now and I hate the
multitude of cables for 2 computers across hardwood floors. The floors
make the cables more bothersome than carpet for some reason.
