I've heard that rumor too. Considering Apple's isolationistic approach, I
wouldn't be surprised. Add to that the recent news from Apogee about
Symphony, it's integration with Logic, and it being Mac only, there seems to
be a power play in the Apple camp for the Mac DAW market, and Digi doesn't
seem to have been invited to the party. MOTU and DP may be next to
re-evaluate, but DP has a lot more to lose since it has no history or basis
on the PC.
I'm not a ProTools fan and might recommend other options for other reasons,
but in all fairness I don't know if I would write it out of your plans on
this rumor alone - just research carefully, and consider the cost of moving
it to a PC if the rumors become fact.

The first time I heard this was, oh, 1998 or so when it looked like Apple
was going under. It was an especially hollow threat then since their PC software
was abysmal. Today, with a hardware partner like M-Audio who knows how to
write Windows drivers and a reasonable presence on the Windows platform the
threat is much less hollow.
Also keep in mind that Avid has their own axe to grind with Apple and FCP.
These conflicts on interest are part of what's good and bad about being both
an application and system software vendor (and in this case a hardware vendor
to boot).
That said, it sure wouldn't *hurt* Digi when they sit down at the bargaining
table to have the rumor out there that they were considering moving their
entire user base to Vista machines, woudl it? I would guess it's probably
in Digi's self interest to simultaneously hold on to it's base of Mac users
while keeping these kind or rumors percolating about at every NAMM show.

I've heard the same thing since Apple aquired Emagic. Since that purchase,
Digidesign has instructed all of their Plugin Partners to had all of their
Plugins PC compatible asap. it's been 3 years since the Emagic purchase,
and it seems that all of Digi's plugin partners have all of thier plugins
PC ready.
Note: Avid's largest stockholders Microsoft. They Microsoft have invested
alot of money in AVID/Digidesign to have it's current markey position. So
all in all, each side have "drawn' their swords.
I agree Motu is in a crazy spot. Thank God, they got into the hardware business
which has carried them.
My advice,is to stay tuned. this is sure to get pretty interesting. What
surprised me is with the Yamaha/Steinberg deal. I and a lot of other Steinberg
users where hoping for some cool integrated products or more affordale controller
for SX/Nuendo. Oh well..

When Apple acquired and released FCP at the NAB show some years back, there
was a major backlash from Avid and Adobe. They say that people from Avid
were talking about dumping Apple at the show, it didn't happen. Adobe did
stopped support for Premier. I do think that it is a possibility that Digi
could drop support for Apple. IMO they would piss off a lot of people if
they did. However, I think both companies would survive it.
There is some talk about Apple bundling all there pro apps, and tighter integration.
There is supposed to be big announcements from Apple in april at NAB. Maybe
this is some of the fuel on the fire???
If you can, wait until the NAB show to see what happens. I wouldn't make
a decision based on a rumor.

James you are right. The majority of Pro-Tools owners/Studios are Apple Based.
That would have been sucicide if they(Digi) would've drop support after the
realese of FCP & The purchase of Emagic.
However, Digi has been sending out messages(4 years) thru it's channels that
"it full steam ahead for the windows platform. I think by now, every ProTool
studio knows what's the master Digidesign/AVID plan.

Rumor has it that big things are in fact happening between Steinberg and
Yamaha - just nothing public yet, but I think it's on the way in the not too
distant future.
One guess: Nuendo is being designed to be a central studio/control hub for
large post and music production facilities. This will be even more
integrated with Yamaha consoles, and other products (softsynth versions of
Yamaha synths?), and probably a future controller or two, or three. VST 3.0
is on the way and will probably enhance that capability with (my guess)
possibly a hybrid of mLan and VST system link -i.e. Not just file
control/check in/check out and project management, but audio/FX/midi
streaming over Gigabit and firewire LANs, and WANs. Add to that a global
network somewhat like Rocket net, but one that may actually survive in
creating a wider collaborative approach to music.
Just a guess...

I would give them time to develop these things Lamont. I think the future
for Steiny users is very bright.
