I've been helping a guy set up a studio today around an 002. He's
interfacing it with a Macbook with a core duo CPU. this is a very cool
laptop, but I was surprised at how much the buffers needed to be bumped just
to play back small projects. The Mac was choking on 12 track counts with
very few plugins at 512k buffers. Bumping the buffers to 1024k cleared
things right up. I was certainly expecting more from this. OTOH, the Digi
002 did sound very good. This guy is a drop dead incredible musician so
maybe that had something to do with it.

BTW, the Macbook was running a 2G Intel coreduo.

Hi Dj.. Yes the Digi002 sounds very good. I uses he same converters as digi's
96 HD unit..

The problem with most Macs (laptops and Imacs) when it comes to buffers and
latency (in respect to ProTools LE)is internal buss architechure. simply
put, not he same PCI thru-put as on the Mac Towers. Also, Mac OS-X has problems
with it's internal Firewire drivers.

Tell your friend to purchase a PCMIA Firewire /USB2 card. This will be on
a separate channel. The internal firewire port is shared bu many things..

I run PT-Mpowered on a Dual Opteron setup with 128 buffers settings =Yeilding
, 48 stereo tracks, at least 3 good verbs(Altiverb, Wizooverb, Waves Ir1)..Comps
Eqs on any channel that it needs..

I'm here to tell it like it T I (is)..Pro Tools mixer (summing) sounds great!!
Nice Full-range sound witha touch of 8k built-in. No matter if you're using
the Digi 002, M-audio audio cards, Pro Tools sound is good.

Hey LaMont,

Thanks for the heads up about this. I had a feeling it might be theFW bus.
Same thing happens wih the onboard FW bus of some PC's. It just doesn't
stack up to a dedicated PCI FW card. Info much appreciated. I've gotta'
agree with you about the sound of Pro Tools. It's come a very long way. I've
been invited to sit in on some mix sessions at Ed Stasiums studio and assist
with whatever I can contibute (I'll probably just sit there with my jaw on
the floor) and I'm really looking forward to it. I talked to him today for
quite a while. He's running an HD system of some sort and getting ready to
upgrade to the latest greatest. He's a certified PT instructor so even
though I don't use the system, I'm likely to get quite a bit of knowledge
about it. It should be fun. I must say that this 002 system didn't sound
anything at all like the old Mix systems. The mixer surface is pretty snazzy
as well.

;o)

No Problem..

DJ.. These days my work flow is such..

-Record, edit in Nuendo.

-Use Tapeit-2 plugin(http://www.silverspike.com/?Products:TapeIt realtime
bounces for stem mixing )

-Then open up PT..Import stems, Mix..

Dj, can you hear a difference in PT vs Cuabse?

I am assumming the same with the IMac? I am looking at
leasing a space that has 2 control rooms, and was thinking
about the new 24" IMac with a Black Lioned 002R for the
smaller room, but it would need some power...

Hey John,
I would not get an Imac for Studio productions.. Same slow(er) PCI thru-put
as their laptops. Since there's no way to install a internal Firewire interface
card, you are stuck with the on-board firewire.(Major no no) in Mac land..

Pony up for the MacPro Tower for music/studio production. It's a different
animal.

Now, you (hot) receptonist can get by with a nice IMac..

Oops.....he's using a Macbook, not a Macbook pro so no PCMCIA slot is
available. bummer! any other suggestions? Alos, he's trying to integrate a
Mackie Onyx mixer with this system via FW and can't get PTLE configured to
use the Onyx inputs and the Digi mixer interface outputs. I thought Macs
could do this kind of stuff as far as seeing multiple audio drivers. any
suggestions about this or do I need to trudge over into Mordor and post this
to the Digi User's Forum?

;P

Thanks for your help, BTW.

I don't know what's going on with the MacBook, it should work. I would check
the PT site. As far as FW being a problem on Macs, I would disagree with
that. Obviously there is some latency with FW in general.

It looks like the Macbook has no express card slot. All you have
to work with is the FW port and USB (yipes!) If there are FW
issues, there may be a tech paper on it.

Start here:

http://search.info.apple.com/?search=Go&lr=lang_en&k word=&type=&newstype=&q=firewire

The MacBook pro has an express card slot. You could get a
card to create to a dedicated FW feed, but he would need to
buy the other computer...

good luck

when's the l;ast time he flashed the pram, nvram deleted preferences,
repaired permissions? macs aren't always happy with multiple fw
devices connected to them. unfortunately his options of the PCMIA or
fw cards does limit his options.

as to multiple devices you will have to set that up as an aggregate
device in the audiomidi setup.

So it's impossible for a Mac laptop without all of the goodies that the
"pro" version would have to just sorta' suck an not be up to the task?
Somehow methinks it entirely possible that theres a performance tradeoff
happening with these budget machines. It's always been that way with any
other product. You pay to play. Welcome to the world of cheap Macs. Yeah,
they're cheap, but .yeah they are compromised........let's just don't
advertize it.we'll let the users fdo that once we've got their $$$.

Same as it ever was.

Well.it's only a couple of months old. I doubt he's done any of these things
but I'll ask. If Macs aren't happy with multiple FW devices, then why are
there multiple FW ports?. why don't they say, "here's two FW ports..Only use
one or you will die. Actually....though, you may have just provided me a
possible answer to his dilemma. I'll get back to you.

DJ, Et al:

PTLE will only recognize a Digi audio interface - If your friend is
trying to use the Digi 002 via FW PLUS the Onyx via FW, that is doomed
to failure. No OSX aggregate audio device action will make it work.

Your friend must use any additional audio I/O via the optical ports on
the 002, or the SPDIF port.

Digi's rules, not Mac/OSX related. I know this because we have a 002
system in our radio station multitrack studio, on a dual proc G5, and I
have been selected as its' administrator. (Sorry, no other Mac/OSX
wisdom available, 'cuz I just started working with the system...)

He actually has the Onyx daisy chained to the Digi 002 mixer's 2nd FW port.
The onyx actually shows up as a device in the PT I/O options. I told him to
register at the Digi users forum and see it this could work. sounds like
he's hosed though from what you are saying because Digi doesn't recognize
aggregate drivers, right?

I had my iBook repaired under the extended warranty.

4 times...

And each time it needed a lot of tuning up to be right.
You would think they would do this as part of the repair dammit!
but nooooo

It's easy to do all this stuff. I can talk you through it on the
phone if you give me a call.

Don't assume it does not need all this stuff because it is almost
new.

Larry's right Deej, a bunch of people were complaining about this on gear
slutz. people wanted to use the 002 with the M-Audio ProjectMix I/O, or
the Profire Lightbridge, and it won't work. It's rumored that this might
change. I think it's one at a time with digi. By the way the MacBook is
considered a consumer laptop.

I thought something had to be screwy, because I can run more than one
Firewire audio device (plus 2 Firewire HD's) on my G5 with no problems. I'm
using DP5 though, so. . .

I also don't have any problems with track counts or latency on the internal
Firewire bus, but again, maybe the G5 is "goosed" up more in that area than
a Mac Book. ?? I have thought about popping a PCI Firewire card in there and
testing both ways to see if there's a big throughput difference.

Sorry I don't have an answer about why the Mac Book, especially the newer
core duo wouldn't have better Firewire performance. I've got a 1.5 year old
Power Book G4, 1.67 GHz, and though I don't use it much for audio, have had
probably 20 or so tracks running in Cubase LE with several plugs. The
interface is a Focusrite Saffire. I've never tested the absolute limits on
the thing. (the Saffire has crap for mic pres by the way)

I wish I could be more help Deej.

Tony

I think that is right - Digi will only allow PTLE/MPowered to recognize
a maximum of 18 I/O, and then, only the exact designated devices -
MBox/002/002R for LE, certain specific M-Audio devices for MP. The fact
that the Onyx shows up in the LE I/O window is probably just a
coincidence related to OSX recognizing the unit on the FW bus.
The Digi audio interfaces act as the 'dongle' for PTLE.

That being said, posting on the DUC should provide a wealth of info...

Good luck,

Get A Dell.. :) Seriousluy, He 's gotta step up to the MacPro Laptop, then
get a Firewire card..

The on-board Firewire interface is not robust enough and shares way too many
irqs or whatever mac OSX terms it..

I don't own a MacBook so I can't really speak for it, but it should work.
It's time for Gene to pipe in. He's got a MacBook Pro. By the way the
new MacBooks have Core 2 Duos in them now. I've got a G3 600Mhz, old and
now slow, no problems with the fireWire. I've run various MOTU, Presonus,
and M-Audio interfaces with no problems. You should be able to run around
24 I/O. It's not a Mac problem, it's a Digi restriction.

I quit upgrading my PT LE partly over this single interface at a time crap
they forced on me ( and then they dropped my interface support).
Also, to run the M Audio interface you need PT- M Powered, unless that has
changed recently. It ain't the same as PT LE.

speaking mostly from my rig if trouble begins it's usually the front
fw input that's the cause. both drives disappeared the other day and
the only solution to bring them back was swapping the cables on both
from one to the other and their port connections. pretty weird if you
ask me but it worked.
