as long as I'm in a posting-like-a-fool mood (shades of 1999) has anyone ever
heard of this thing?

Every major studio had an Infernal at the time. It was the first box that
allowed speed changes without pitch changes (or pitch without speed), and
a few seconds of “full bandwidth” sampling. It had a mid-fi sound because
of the converters and limited bandwidth (un-weighted). I forget the year,
but it was all-the-buzz at AES when it first came out. It was “Autotune”
for several years.
I would love to have one but repairs are non-existent. Many of its effects
are easily recognizable.

Yep, I've even seen a small handful of 'em.

Al from Ministry has two he was showing me - neither work.

you guys are amazing. Thanks for the photo, mark!

I'd honestly never heard the name. But then, I'm not from the world of professional
audio like you guys are.

Thanks, all!

Hey Gene,

Remember the little french guy who sat there in the booth at AES
demoing (singing mostly) all day long?

What a cool and new sound. Definitely mid fi, but in a cool way.
I want one.

I think their price is really high though...

I remember him well, but I never saw him sit. I had a long talk with him on
the first day at AES that year. I distinctly remember talking to him about
Roger Nichol’s WENDEL, which was the only thing that could do any non-tape
sampling at the time. He replied with a very French scoff. Very interested
in talking about the technology, and immaculately dressed as I recall. I
dragged a few studio owners over to his small booth during that show, including
Ann, from House of Music, who picked up one of the first units, so I got
to play with it a lot.

Steve Dwork was the only NY (US) repair tech for the Inf. I think he is still
around at:

PS I do remember him singing through the unit and getting strange harmonies
and double sounds out of it, but I can’t remember what song he kept singing
over and over. I think it was a French classic like "Fara Jacka". The reverbin
it was also nice.

I remember the Wendel well... used it on shitloads of stuff
in the late 80's/early 90's. Triggered pretty accurately, just
a teeeeeensy bit behind the original sound - great for snare in
that regard, kinda made pushing drummers sit back a bit :)
Lemme put it this way - triggered close enough to where you
could do a workable blend of the original & triggered sounds on
a lot of things depending on the tempo & the genre.

Jam And Lewis used this machine back in the late 80s and 90s for many Janet
Jackson songs. They nicked named it "Ghetto Pro Tools"..
