If the driver will suport two + units, it might be a monster with a
dedicated 4 x port FW PCIe card, especially if you can further
merge/interpatch within the software control panel. I'd probably look pretty
hard at this if the price was right. I'm currently doing pretty much what
this will do using 4 x Behringer SRC 2496 units along with an RME ADI4-DD
for real time SRC for two of my outboard reverbs and interpatching various
other I/O through a Frontier Apache and M-Audio C03 units to connect the
other digital processors, SMUX I/O of my converters and the I/O of my slave
computer with the free I/O of the master computer. It's a daunting scenario.
I have written an I/O sheet (small manual) for this that I have memorized
and the faceplates of the gear are all labelled as well. Same thing with all
of the midi I/O I have here. There's a lot of it and it is interpatched
through an Ensoniq KMX-16. This is only about half as insane as things were
when I was integrating Paris with the Cubase DAW. I watched the entire video
demo and this looks like they were reading my mind.....which may be why they
stopped before it got too complex and twisted....but there is no midi I/O on
this interface, is there? Didn't see any. That may be a show stopper. Does
anyone make a decent (large) midi interface now that Steinberg discontinued
the Midex?

On a Mac you can aggregate PCI(e) and Firewire interfaces to build one large
I/O system. Is this possible under XP?

You are, of course, just mentioning this to twist the knife........right?
(actually, there is a Win driver called ASIO4all that is supposed to
accomplish this. Last I heard, it sucked big time.

Mixed manufacturers? What kind of latency are you getting with sample
library VSTi's and mixed firewire/PCIe?
My Fireface 800 doesn't have the low latency of the PCI HDSP system, so I'm
curious if when mixing the two, latency is subject to the limitation of the
firewire interface, or if the Mac/Core audio manages it better than XP
might.
With XP/PC you can add interfaces from one manufacturer, but I doubt
Firewire and PCIe would be elegant - the only time I tried it the Firewire
interface was only connected for access to its' control panel - only the PCI
interface handled direct I/O.
I also agree with James on the Konnekt - 32x32 would be much more attractive
if used as an interface and not just a converter/patchbay, but I fear that's
a firewire limitation.

I don't think it's FW, the Pro Fire Light bridge will do 34x36. http://www.m-audio.com/products/en_us/ProFireLightbridge-mai n.html

Hi James - Any experiences with this unit to report (drivers, latency,
integration with PCI audio cards)? M-Audio never had a great rep for
drivers and quality, but I know Lamont gave it a thumbs up, so it seems
worth considering. I could use an extra 4 lightpipe ports. I've been
reluctant to put as much weight on firewire as PCI/PCIe so far, but would
like to be able to implement something like this.

Actually, I am considering building a PC for mixing.
I have become quite enamored with Nebula3, and although I could route to
it using a complex ADAT maze, I want to at least consider a PC – centric
mix setup.
If I use my MOTU PCI setup for my primary I/O, I probably can’t also integrate
the TC box for I/O to my 6000 and a few other tricks I would like it to do,
right?
I guess this is not the right place to ask if Cubase is the right choice
for a mix engine. I’m also looking at Reaper (and Nuendo naturally). I have
used Nuendo for several mixes and it always gave good, if not great results.

Hey Dedric, I have no experience with the Pro Fire Lightbridge. I was following
the user reports on gear slutz awhile back. Most reports were good, but
someone didn't like something about the way the monitoring is set up, or
some thing. You might want to read up on those threads. Also, early on,
some didn't like that there are only 18 I/O available in PT. They may have
changed this by now. All other software can utilize all of the I/Os, such
as Nuendo, Cubase, etc.

I'm starting to get my head around the wierd bugs in Cubase 4 now. Not that
I would recommend it for a professional mix platform right now, but it does
have some cool features. When I talked to Steinberg tech support last week,
they were making "60 days till the big update to Cubase 4.1" noises, but I
wouldn't put my eggs in that basket just now. I'm going to give Nuendo 3 a
try soon.
One main reason I'm stiking with Steinberg instead of moving to Reaper is
because I've got Systemlink pretty well integrated into my situation and I'm
liking it.........plus..I'm just sorta' comfortably miserable with C4 right
now. It's sorta' like Paris....you never know WTF is gonna' happen next.

I can't remember the name at the moment, but there is a software vendor out
there that does build a generic driver that's supposed to unify to one
driver set. It takes the latency from the slowest piece of hardware you have
in the set. Dang... can't remember the name.

I have a ProFire Lightbridge. I use it for all kinds of stuff including Pro
Tools-M where it does give 34X34 up to 48K, or 18X18 at 96 (PT 7.3.1). It
has a headphone out but it only chases SPDIF out. Latency goes down to 256,
but I never use it for cutting…only mixing where I may use it in PT or aggregate
it into my main I/O for sends to and from Paris or a V-stack PC. It has no
internal direct monitor system or any internal mixing. I have not had any
of the clock issues talked about at Gearslutz. It makes PT-M a viable alternative
to HD if you are mixing analog and it has been a good purchase for me coming
in handy many times. It does work with the Core Audio Aggregation tool along
with my MOTU PCIe rig.

I know its blasphemy...but...
At some point the intricacies of relying on digital connection, innumerable
ADDA, etc., seem to fall into the realm of major risk taking...
Again, just an opinion, but even with the wart infested Samp 9, having a
dedicated console eliminates almost ALL routing issues...true zero latency
monitoring, effects to cue sends, and no drivers to worry about...
Just food for thought...

With 3rd party software like ASIO4ALL yes.

It will only be as low as the weakest card in the system.

As long as the PC is using the proper hardware and is configured
correctly then there is no difference in performance.

I think the biggest limitation on the unit is the firewire portion. It
would be better served with more I/O's. The Dice II chip that they use
for Firewire is not very reliable on MAC or PC. They are just starting
to be able to sort out compatibility and performance issues.
