There was a big festival across the road at the Trimble Hot Springs tonight.
I was trying to get some mixing done but they had the PA cranked so loud
that I gave up and just decided to go over there. The place was full of
joyous people just dancing their asses off to tune after tune of selections
by Selena.

I remember back in the spring of 1995 I had been living in a hotel and
working on the Texas border in this crazy place called Rio Grande city for
months and had really been starting to pay attention to her music after
being inundated with it down there. Her upbeat spirit and music brought so
much joy. The star potential and the massive following she was developing
was really amazing. I was driving back down to Rio Grande city early one
morning from some time off in Austin and I had not been checking the radio
or news. I pulled into a little town not far from the border called
Hebbronville and the streets were full of people wearing black mourning
garb. It was the same story for the next 100 miles all the way to the border
and for a couple of weeks afterward.

It made me happy (and sad) hearing her music again tonight. I wish I had
gone to one of her concerts when I had the chance.

You can buy the DVD of her very last concert... the one she did
at (I think) the Astrodome, where she wore the purple jumpsuit
thingy that made JLo famous when she wore the same thing in the
Selena biopic. IIRC, it was the day after that concert that she
got shot, so it was like her first & only really huge
performace of that size... it was right when she was starting
to really take off for superstardom. I saw most of it again
about a month ago when we took some visitors over to Juarez for
dinner - the cantina we went to had it playing on the
projection screen.
