Follow up to Chris about the Intel patch [message #87311]

It looks worse than we realized. This is from Theo de Raadt, one of the true
alpha geeks in the world. He's the main man behind OpenBSD and also the maintainer
of SSH, so he knows a bit about 'puters.

HI Thad,
Excellent thanks been looking for info on what the "problem" . The sad
part is that AMD has had very few of these type of design problems in
their history.
But now are barely afloat because they don't rush stuff out. Intel made
a decided effort to bring down AMD by pushing out their dual-core
technology earlier and now selling their cpus at what I bet is a lose to
force AMD to drop their more. Sense AMD is 8 times smaller than Intel it
is easy for Intel to loose some money to gain more market share. Even we
were forced by Intel drastic moves and having AMD hot a brick wall in
development for a while. We had been a AMD only shop for at least years
before that. Now we sell nothing but Intel. There is nothing by AMD
worth selling at this point. Hopefully this will help give AMD a kick up
so they can survive Intel's onslaught. If AMD is finally able get the
new multi-core technology they have out of the lab you will see many
people going back to them. I bet Apple will be the first one.

Intel makes M$oft look like a highly more, honestly competitive company.

What's scary is that 'userland' code should be able to exploit some of these.
Bad bad bad.

Oh good. Glad I spent the extra $300 on the quad. I wonder if these
errata are responsible for some of the weird bugs people are having on
Core2 DAW machines? Sometimes I think it's amazing that computers work
at all.

I looked at the list and while I'm no Theo de Raadt (who is?) none of them
looked particularly audio related. I think 99.999% of DAW problems are either
pilot error, dirty software installs, or bad drivers.

So, if I have an Intel Pentium "D" 820 64-bit dual-core, do I
need this patch? Or is the "Core2Duo" (what this patch says
it's for) a different series?

if I need it for my series of Intel chip.

Basically any processor past th Pentium D from what I can see.
I have already see a performance improvement in Cubase.

YOu might also want to make sure you are using the most current BIOS for
your motherboard before the patch.
