When I heard Yammy married Steiny, I was hoping for some products that
really integrated Cubase and a mixer/controller. This may be what I was
hoping for. I hope it really has quality sound.

It's available in Britain but not yet the US. GBP899.00 = U$1,782.18

HI Bill,
Yes they do look promising. Hopefully the analog end sounds good. They
definitely seems to have paid more attention to feature for the home
studio market. It actually seem to have a more outputs on it which is a
big sore point withe the Mackie Onyx and all the clones of it. Looks
like a hybrid between the O1x and O1v but I sure hope it isn't still
using M-Lan. That could be its Achilles heel.

Can these be daisy chained? Do they have insert points and digital I/O? I
like the concept but HTF am I going to interface 6 devices via
AES/Spdif/Optical and 21 analog eq/comps at mixdown with these? (yeah, you
don't have to say it.......I know......DM2k.)

Chris,

Admittedly MLan got a rocky start, but it does work OK with the newer
drivers. I have an i88x which took me a few days to set up but it is
pretty stable now.

HI Bill,
How low of a latency can it operate not reliably? IN the past 10ms was
pretty the lowest. Which is unusable for VSTi IMHO.

Remember when the Prophet V synth was so exciting cuz you could play two
notes at once? Wow! And for only $6000! Then Yamaha came along and made it
obsolete with the 16-note DX7 for under 2000? This isn't gonna be one of
those revolutionary things, is it?

I really don't see how it could be revolutionary at all...it looks to be an
upscale of a Mackie Onyx, really - doesn't have anywhere close to the power,
the flexibility, or the sheer mojo of a DM2K...

I saw this by just reading the spec - obviously I haven't heard it, but nothing
really struck me as revolutionary.

On the same side of a different coin, exactly how is this 'new' mixer supposed
to replace a DM2K or 02R96? They don't even appear to share anything except
all are Yamaha and all are mixers...

agreed.. Like James Mac has stated: These companie are all pouring their money
into the bedroom project studio user.

I have some pro features like talk-back, but is a little lite onthe channel
side. I think a 24-32 channel is what's needed.

I agree, the days of the console are very numbered...To the best of my knowledge,
exactly 100% of the audio world has seen the proverbial writing on the wall...and
with technology doublilng every 3-5 years, digital consoles are obsolete
the moment they are released...sure, there are still a few big board users,
but each year those numbers drop significantly, and the boards are either
stripped for parts or decommissioned and stored...

I can't say the Yamaha/Steinberg cooperative is gonna do anyone any good
in the long run...its as if the two have throw their hands up in tandem and
surrendered to PTHD...I haven't heard ANYTHING regarding Nuendo in literally
months...all the while SSL and Soundscape seem poised to give Digi a run
for the money, but with ProTools sessions being the ennumerated standard
for AES protocols now, it almost seems hopeless for any other format or company...

But there again, when 99% of any audio app's user base is more concerned
with fake drums, putting everything on the grid, and having mp3 as the final
delivery format, we all get what we derserve...

Sorry to vent. (no, I'm not...but apologies are polite :) )

and more than 'one' sweep EQ, and more channel throughput. Agreed indeed.

It goes down to 128 samples, but it's a moot point. I don't have a
screaming fast machine, but from my experience unless you have an empty
project you can't get any interface fast enough for professional
recording (I mean really playing something, not just a pad or a string
line).

For recording VSTis I use 2 computers. I have the main one with the
whole song on it, set at a high latency, and a I set up a second one
with just the individual VSTi active, set at low latency, and while I
record the midi data on the main one, I monitor the output from the
second one. For playback the main one takes over. I use a mixer of course.

This system works brilliantly and I never have to stress over latencies.
I hate doing things that in any way make a client or visiting musician
uncomfortable or inconvenienced. This is probably a hold over from
running for-hire studios. I don't like anything that unnecessarily draws
the artists attention onto the recording process, and any noticeable
latency certainly does that.

So, the latency of MLan is not an issue to me.

Yeah, and the first thing every keyboard player wanted to know was how
good was the organ patch.

I had a midied Prophet for a while and I loved it.

OK, we get it: you love the DM2K! Get a room, dude!

I actually had a DM1K at my studio for a while but I was so busy at the
time I only took it out of the flight case. I wish I had spent a little
time listening to it.

I wasn't expecting these little mixers to replace the DM series, but
I've been hoping we would see some synergistic products resulting from
the union of the 2 companies. Both have been revolutionary leaders in
the past, so there is hope of some interesting shit happening.

Hate to say it, but it looks to me like it's a reworking of
their MG-series, but in black, and with convertors attached.

Steinberg is working hard with the new Nuendo version, as far as I have
heard. Talked with one of my Norwegian friends in Greece a couple of weeks
ago that's often doing jobs for Steinberg. He is doing beta testings for
them right now but wouldn't say too much about the new version:-)

That was my first thought too, but it seemed to be a digital mixer, not
an analog w/ dig I/O. Maybe I didn't read the fine print.

Yep.. I have my yearly rant about no other companies stepping up to theplate
to give Digi a run.

People have been speculating about Apple's new DAW could be that product.
We'll have to see.

As for Steingberg and Yamaha...Major dissapointment. Those new little NV
whatever mixers/interfaces are not what has bben asked for bythe public.

Then there are the Euphonix crowd. Very nice interface, but you';re gonna
shell out 25k and over...Still cheaper than the SSL AW9000 and the Digi ICons..

Edmund...Where are you..

I think that Yamaha is hitting the largest percentage of the current
market with this product... the home recordist. Not everyone needs
100 channels with insane routing and monstrous DSP capability. Be
patient, good things WILL come from the merger of Yamaha and
Steinberg. Face it, the larger studios are dropping like flies, would
you invest R&D money to provide products for a shrinking market?

There will be some products from Yamaha that will bridge the gap
between the DM2K and the N Series offerings. I also anticipate a
large step up from the DM2K being offered within the next two years.
Add that to the current integration of the Yamaha mixers with CU/NU
and I think you will have a system that will steal a good portion of
Digi's business.

Let's face it though, unless Avid/Digi does something astronomically
stupid, people are not going to walk away from "the standard", no
matter what it sounds like.

David.
