Tony's "basic" answer was in response to your "basic" question:
"How and where do I install DRUMAGOG in Paris 3.0 MAC G4"
This question did not elude to 25 years of studio
ownership... perhaps if the question were worded
differently, you would have received a more "pro" answer.
To be honest, I got the same impression by how you worded
the question... that you were a newbie.
I don't think for a moment that Tony was "talking down" to you.
Regards,
David.

Steve,
Many apologies if my reply sounded a bit "harsh". I must have created a
folder called "VSTPlugins" several years ago as every time I have installed
Drumagog (including the original install) it's gone with without a hitch.
Like I said, I guess I just assumed everyone had a VST Plugins folder in
place. Mine's always been named "VSTPlugins". I think that's the standard
Steinberg name for the folder, but I'm not positive. I actually reinstalled
Drumagog just now to make sure I wasn't talking out my ass and apparently,
another program demo I recently tried out had installed another "VSTPlugins"
folder and Drumagog asked me which one it should use.
Again, I'm sorry if I sounded condescending, but when you ask a question,
get one reply, and then jump back in saying none of what you were told on
this group was right, well, it seems like you're being a bit condescending
yourself. I know that's not how you worded it, but that's how I took it.
Like my attempt to help you was just a bunch of crap and wasted your time or
something. I'm sorry you feel like you get "smart mouthed" every time you
come here. That certainly hasn't been my experience. I've been here since
2001 and this is by far one of the friendliest users groups on the web.
There aren't many of us PARIS people left and only a pitiful handful of Mac
PARIS people, so I hope if I have a question that you can help with, that
you will help. I will do the same for you, unless you'd prefer me not to.
Just let me know and I'll be glad to zip it.
Peace,
Tony

Hey Steve
Sorry about your previous NG experiences but you might want to post follow
up questions when the answer doesn't make sense to you. This group is very
tolerant and very helpful, I know because I ask some of the most obviously
dumb questions around.
We're not psychics here, we have no idea who you are, what your level of
experience is etc. so cut us some slack.
That being said Tony gave you the correct answer...you were just unaware of
the "VSTPlugin folder" issue...no need to get your knickers in a bind.
Don
ps. This is the internet, grow some thicker skin

OK..... I am taking in all that all of you are saying. It appears that you
feel it is I that have offended you (Tony). Alright... you have a community
of folks here and I rather new to the forum have posted something that struck
a nerve. Tony I appologize.
Aside from the VST issue, I will tell you what set me off. I was refered
to this site, told just what you guys are all saying here, about all the
old pros of the Paris n'all..... Great!! so I started checking it out and
see what gets covered on the forum. Daily (for a while) I would check it.
Never saw anything remotely mentioned about the Paris. In fact, type in the
word Paris in the search engine. Know what you'll find? Now don't quote me,
but I think there is a couple entries. Type in "installing VST pluggins"
The point I am myphed about is,90% is every other software, relatives, garage
sales, and my favorite, crafty ways to swear on the web. The only way I have
ever gotten help, was if I e-mailed someone and asked if I may call them.
THEN! I got help. Know why?? Because now you would be accountable to act
professional. Don, in regard to "cut us some slack" and "we're not psychics
here" Point well taken. That's constructive, and calls me to act more professional.
In regard to "get thicker skined" well... point taken but, I don't come to
the forum to screw around, tell jokes with cute little ways of how to swear
on the web (which I am not accusing you of) I come here because I was told
that this is a website of professional people who can ask for help from others
who have been through the mill. This is a very serious business for me. Check
out my website and you will see. stevecoxproductions.com I will lay low
and cut off any heated posts that I may feel led to enter. Lastly, if you
install Paris on a computer solely commited to Paris, there is no folder
called VSTPlugins. The folder paris has ( HD>System Folder>Ensoniq>Plugins)is
all you find. When one of you mentioned Stienberg, ahhhh that may be how
there is a folder somewhere on their HD labled VSTPlugins. But I don't have
Stienberg anything or MOTU anything. I have Paris. Rim from Drumagog was
the first ever of anyone who instantly knew what the problem was. I will
lay low now, and will reply as professionally as possible. Again Tony, I
appologise.

Hey Steve
Welcome to the forum...as we are a dying breed, we often assume people are
in the loop as to Paris's functionality and it's quirks.
Please hang around and enjoy the banter, get to know the guys and you will
become hooked by the knowledge, generousity and humour of the crew but not
necessarily in thast order. You'll also find late nite phone calls or skype
chats are not uncommon around here.
So once again welcome to the forum and I personally hope you decide to stick
around....(didn't I already say that)

Hey Don, thanks! I think I will post a new fresh start. I will be interested
in your thoughts. I have a few minutes before my session with a jingle, it
will be "Paris in a Laptop"
God Bless,

Steve,
I have another theory on why you might get help more often when talking on
the phone. In my experience, (and this thread is a prime example) it's
pretty difficult to ask a complicated question, or give a complicated answer
in just a few words. Both parties assume the other understands what they
meant when often there just isn't enough information exchanged. Had we
talked on the phone, I'm sure through the course of trouble shooting we may
well have figured out what the hang up was. With that said, if you can
contact the software vendor directly, they may have the answer right away,
as they've probably seen the problem before. Unfortunately, all vendors
aren't nearly as accommodating as Rim Buntinas is and sometimes we have to
work together through trial and error to figure stuff out.
Over the years this group has developed into much more of a community of
PARIS and former PARIS users and fewer and fewer technical questions come
up. Though I've never meant many of the people I talk with here, I have a
definite sense that they are my friends and many times the banter tends to
be jovial. Don't get me wrong, everyone here can and will be helpful with
PARIS questions, but if you are looking for strictly technical support, you
will be disappointed with much of the "fluff" we engage in. With some
patience, there is a phenomenal amount of collective brain power here to be
tapped. This includes all areas of recording, not just PARIS related.
There are a million things I don't know about Macs and PARIS, but if you
ever want to bounce a question my way, feel free to give me a call.
515-233-3191. I have a day gig, so call in the evening CST if I'll need to
be at my rig. I might not have a quick answer for you, but I'll be glad to
do what I can to help.

Hey Steve! I just wanted to jump in here and say a few things. First welcome
to the NG! I've been here since, well, I think around 1997, mostly lurking,
and learning. A lot of the greats have moved on, and a lot of the greats
are still here, and some still pop in every once in awhile. If you stick
around this place it will grow on you.
I have to step up and say that I think that there must have been a bit of
a miss understanding, or something. It's too bad you got off to a bad start
here, hopefully things will get ironed out. I have to say that Tony is one
of the coolest guys here, and I hope you guys get to know each other, so
to speak. I will personally vouch for both of you guys and say that your
both good guys, honest men and great to do business with. Tony has always
been willing to help out with questions, especially Mac questions. I also
know that you will be a great asset to the NG, if you choose to stick around.
Both of you guys have personally volunteered to help me out and even picked
up the phone to do so, and I really appreciate that, thanks!
Again, welcome to the Paris news group!

Steve... you have been lucky enough to stumble upon a forum
that contains a metric buttload of killer minds, that never
cease to amaze me in what they know, how they know it, and how
they apply it, across a very wide number of fields of
endeavor... really, truly.
Anyway, I'm going to reply to a bit of your last post, so read
onward, if you please:
>Alright... you have a community of folks here and I rather new
>to the forum have posted something that struck a nerve.
Easy to do in any forum where you're the "newbie",
fuggeddaboudit; these people are forgiving.
>Aside from the VST issue, I will tell you what set me off. I
>was refered to this site, told just what you guys are all
>saying here, about all the old pros of the Paris n'all.....
>Great!! so I started checking it out and see what gets covered
>on the forum. Daily (for a while) I would check it.
>Never saw anything remotely mentioned about the Paris.
What do expect from old pros... they already know all about
Paris & use it every day... you think a guy who's been using it
for five years & has it down is going to have a question about
how to edit something or whatnot? Unlikely... so they talk
about politics & the weather, and in Deej's case, how many
skunks & bears his fucking huge dogs ate last week.
>In fact, type in the word Paris in the search engine. Know
>what you'll find?
Hilton? A city in France? A link to a website selling a creepy
sex video?
>The only way I have ever gotten help, was if I e-mailed
>someone and asked if I may call them.
>THEN! I got help. Know why?? Because now you would be
>accountable to act
No, because then you asked someone a specific question about a
specific thing... you got the same help here by doing just
that. If you had posted the same question on rec-audio-pro, you
would've gotten one guy who told you (no matter what the issue
was & what gear you were using) that you were using shit gear
because it wasn't 2" analog and that was your problem, another
who would've told you if it ain't Pro-Tools, it sucks, and
another who would've asked what genre of music you were
recording, what mics you were using, what preamps, etc., as if
that had anything to do with your particular question, and if
you had gotten one good answer, it would've been from someone
on this group who also happens to post there from time to time.
Here you had just a couple of questions from those trying to
help, and at least one good answer that you also happened to
have duplicated from Rim... good for him for knowing how to give
good support to his clients.
>In regard to "get thicker skined" well... point taken but, I
>don't come to the forum to screw around,
Well, then you're in the wrong place, MUTHAFUCKA!!! because
there's lots of screwing around going on here... there ALWAYS
is among friends, though, isn't there? There's also lots of
good info, as well, however, so you ought to consider hanging
around.
>I come here because I was told that this is a website of
>professional people who can ask for help from others
>who have been through the mill. This is a very serious
>business for me.
It's a very serious business for lots of people here, and it's
also a hobby for lots of peope here, and it's also something in
between for lots of people here. Point is, many of the "lots of
people here" might just - and don't be offended when I say
this - MIGHT JUST know more about your Paris setup and how to
get the most out of it than you do, regardless of how seriously
they each take it in terms of career or monetary gains; and the
reason for that is because they're all passionate about the
system, and are always looking for ways to improve on what
they've got... lemme give you a few examples of what people on
this NG have done for the Paris User Collective; get ready to
be somewhat impressed:
A.) Did you know that Chuck Duffy, the guy who originally
started this newsgroup, ran & maintained the servers
on his own dime in Maryland for a number of years, including
this particular URL, plus a chatserver? Never aked for a penny
of help from anyone, and only did this to help all Paris users.
Passionate about the system.
B.) Did you know that Kim in Australia, the guy who currently
serves up this NG, runs & maintains the servers on his own
dime? Also hasn't asked for a penny of help from anyone, though
a number of folks have offered. Passionate about the system.
C.) Did you know that even though Emu/Ensoniq, and Intelligent
Devices ceased supporting Paris, people on this users group who
are also programmers had come up with a driver for windows XP
so that you can run Paris on updated Windows systems? I forget
who did this, but good lord, think about it... users concocting
& writing their own drivers, and you can get the for free! How
often do you find that? (never). Passonate about the system.
D.) Did you know that the previously-mentioned Chuck Duffy is
also a programmer, and that he ported a bunch of Ensoniq plug-
ins from other platforms over to the Paris EDS format, and also
wrote some new ones, and then made them available for a very
reasonable fee, and finally (recently) made them available for
absolutely NOTHING!???! Ask nicely after reading this post, and
someone might point you to them.
Anyway, I'm not even a Paris user anymore and I still hang out
here... One reason is that I like these guys, and another
reason is that the collective brain trust is pretty
remarkable... want to know about a certain mic or preamp?
Chances are someone here has used it. Want to know about how to
sync an external app (VSTi on a separate computer, MIDI, Synth
Workstation, Video, etc.) to Paris? Chances are someone here
has done it. Want to know if a '67 SG with black soapbars
sounds better through a newer Marshall or an older Mesa for a
Blink-182 sound, or whether a Shiny Box ribbon sounds better
than a Royer on an upright bass, or if you should go with a
set of Mackie 824's or Dynaudio BM5A's for your new set of
nearfields, you'll get lots of good & very useful opinions here.
It's a lot more than just a Paris users group, if you get my
drift, and well worth being a part of, so stick around.

Hey Neil,

my word I won't be posting any HOT replies anymore. I didn't sleep well after
the post. Hard to sleep with one foot in your mouth and the other one in
your... well you get the picture. I am asking everyone offended... Forgive

Hey Neil! That was harsh, but to the point. You mentioned rec-audio-pro,
but forgot to mention the Fletcher factor! If a newbee went on there and
accidently said that they didn't agree with Fletcher, about a hundred of
his brainwashed followers would jump all over the poor guy. He'd be severely
insulted, his life threatened multiple times, and would be tarred and feathered,
and that would be in the first fifteen minutes! No offense to Fletcher,
but he is a self professed audio snob, and some people go to far with it
all. Not all news groups are created equal, and this one is a LOT more civil.

Steve,
No apology necessary. I had extra thick skin installed when I used to

Sounds like Tony has you covered.
You could also go to chuck's page and down loading all of the plugins, the
manuals should be in the zip files. As for how to use them, you might want
to search the paris archives using a news group reader. Kim might be able
to tell you how to do that. This is kind of what I'm talking about in another
post when I'm talking about "How to cook in Paris with Paris recipes". I
think this would help all of us.
Chuck's plugins are at: www.greatidea.com/downloads/
Tony also has some mod pack presets posted here:
www.mercysakes.com/paris/vault
Hope this helps
