I had no luck with any of the suggestions I have received so I went back =
to my *pre-tweaked* Ghost image and reloaded it.

I did all of the preliminary tweaks (prior to the part where system =
services are tweaked). Everything worked fine. then I started doing the =
recommended changes to system services.....no disabling of any of them, =
just setting them to manual. I did two to three at a time, thinking I =
could always go back and set them back to the defaults once I hit the =
wall.......wrong!!!!=20

I'm not sure exactly which service, or combination of services being =
changed fromn automatic to manual is causing this, but it's definitely =
being caused by making changes in this area. To figure this out, I'm =
going to have to "Ghost" after I make each one, because once the fatal =
change is made, resetting back to defaults does not work. This will take =
a very long time and each Ghost Image uses quite a bit of HD space. I do =
have a 200G drive here and I may just do this for posterity's sake. It's =
just one of those things that could save some poor schmuck like me a lot =
of grief. I don't have time to do this right now. this system is rocking =
right along with the tweaks that work and I've got 12 songs to mix. Once =
I can come up for air, I may go back and Ghost the system services =
tweaks one by one until I find the gremlin.

Thanks Neil, Aaron...et al for the help/suggestions.

Deej - going where no man has (been a big enough dumbass to want to =
have) gone before.

Hi DJ,
This is one of the better guides to actually knowing what each services do.

Thanks Chris...........I think this statement from the omnipotent elder geek
pretty much sums up my experience with this, as follows:

Frankly, I don't recommend you change any of the services from the default
installation of XP. Yes, you may pick up a tiny performance gain by fiddling
with the settings, but it won't be anything substantial. It's just my
opinion, but if you are in a situation where these gains are necessary to
achieve an increased level of system performance, it would be wiser to
upgrade the physical system to one that is adequate to benefit from the XP
operating system.

......however, now that I know of the eldergeek.......my life will be a
living hell until I read and attempt to grok all of this.

If a tweak is done in the woods and no one is there to hear see it, did it
make any noise at all?

;o)

ah...services....my jr sys admin...uh, I mean my *bass

help...so I asked my *real* guru what's the deal and all he did was

Well.......I've got a fast stable system now. Is it tweaked to the very =

it is tweaked enough and it's batouttahell quick and everything works, =

I've had it running for a few hours now looping a 30 track project with =
lots of UAD-1 plugins and no problems.

I'm Ghosting and then I'm done........at least for a while.

Thanks again everybody.

after I make each one, because once the fatal change is made, resetting
back to defaults does not work. This will take a very long time and
each Ghost Image uses quite a bit of HD space. I do have a 200G drive
