OK, now I haven't done this before. Nobody is under any obligation. Only
do this if you want to, and only donate what you want to.
However, it has become clear that my old UPS is getting cranky, or has got
cranky, and after all I did only spend $185, and she's a cheap Asian import,
and for whatever reason it doesn't like it's new home... and a number of
people expressed a desire to contribute... so...
On the newsgroup website, you will now find a new little donation button:
http://news.parisnewsgroup.com
As I said, there is no obligation. Do as you will. I'd buy it myself, but
I ran out of beer money in this pay and I don't want to do it again next
month. ;o) So since a few generous souls put forward a desire to donate,
I guess I'll allow it. ;o) I'll still put in whatever the gap is as required.
I'm doing my research into UPS at the moment. Hopefully we'll get a better
one than last time. If you donate too much I'll get a better one. We'll see
how we go.
The server itself seems to be fine still, other than the fan seems upset
and slow, but I have a new processor and fan which I will put in shortly,
maybe over the weekend... soon as I can find time to google info on PIII
slot I processors and changing them. ;o) The backup server also seems happy.
The system's all good except the UPS.
For those who didn't see the first post, the reason for the outages eventually
became clear when the server refused to run on the UPS power any longer.
and had to switch to mains, so we are currently without a UPS on the server,
which is no good of course. I get paid in a week, so I'll be buying one over
Easter weekend.
Hopefully my link works. Paypal said it would. ;o)
We have about a week until purchase date I expect.
Thanks in advance to anybody who donates.
Cheers,
Kim.

Is there a currency conversion? I didn't think of that. I had the choice
and could have set the thing to do AU dollars, but figured as most participants
are in the states it would be better to let people do it in their native
currency.
Maybe I should change it.
Oh well, people can change it manually if they wish...
....if they've read the thread... ;o)
Cheers,
Kim.

I sent some money (not enought. I feel bad now.). I'll send more if it's
needed.
Could you let us know what the target amount is and how close we are?
Thanks!

Sincerely,

Kim,
The moolah is on its way.
I was so freakin' lonely here at work when the server went down. I really
missed you guys! (Scary - I know!)
Thanks for all you do!

Hey Kim,
I sent some money - hope it helps the cause.
It's the least we can do considering all you've done for us.

Well, it appears we're going along nicely. :o)
We've currently just hit $300US, which converts to just over $400 Australian,
hence we could already buy this without me even putting any in...
http://www.scorptec.com.au/index.php?prdid=10212
Or this next one might be a good one. It's an extra $100, but I'm guessing
we'll get a couple more donations, and I'm happy to top it up. This one has
AVR (as recommended by DC) and provides "Up to 100 minutes backup time" which,
even at half that, is enough to cover 98% of outages let's face it...
http://www.scorptec.com.au/index.php?prdid=8619
All in all I'm overjoyed at the response guys. Incredible. You guys really
do love this place don't you. :o)
Something like that should be enough I'd think, but really, we can spend
as much as we like on a UPS. The sky's the limit:
http://www.scorptec.com.au/index.php?catid=24&subid=91
....mind you the most expensive units there are designed of course of multiple
servers with monitors etc.
Let's let it trickle along and see where we land. My guess is we'll be able
to buy something pretty nice. Don't worry about going the second dip just
yet Mike. ;o) If we get up to the $600-$800 Australian mark, we'll get very
nice unit.
No more lonely days without a NG.
There certainly is a sinking feeling when you press the button and it doesn't
respond isn't there? ;o)
Cheers,
Kim.

AVR rocks, but I do like the APC and Tripp-Lite units better than
the Belkin.
Try to get at least a 1000VA unit if you can.

Thanks Don.
I don't think we have Tripp-Lite units over here, but we're getting close
to being able to afford one of these:
http://www.apc.com/resource/include/techspec_index.cfm?base_ sku=BR1500I
I think the server only uses about 100watts, or not even, so this should
give us around 50 minutes of backup time or probably more. Complete with
AVR and the rest...
You're not the only person who's recommended APC...
Cheers,
Kim.

That looks like a good one. I have actually been sitting at the
