It's not like the Mac somebody just bought is now going to be worthless.
The stuff you recently bought is not worthless because some new whiz bang
MOBO just came out with faster processors. And what would those new Processors
cost anyways?
You just said that computers become obsolete in 9 months. Yes, there is
a thing called an upgrade cycle in the computer industry. Have you ever
heard of Moore's law? Yes Apple MOBOs cost more to replace than buying an
after market MOBO, but it's unlikely that you would have to do that. The
processors are upgradeable on the Apple Mac Pros, so there is an upgrade
path. Mac users get a lot more use out of their Macs before they feel the
need to upgrade, and the resale on Macs is a lot better. In short we get
our moneys worth.
You need to consider the OS that works with those Apple MOBOs. Of course
in your mind nothing could be better than Windows. I use both and Windows
sucks!
Consider where Windows is going! Have you looked at the pros and cons of
Vista? Talk about being locked in, you better take a closer look at Vista
and not buy THAT marketing hype. What will Vista cost to add to you pieced
together PC? What about all the software you will have to upgrade. For
the full blown version it's $199 to upgrade and $299 for a new retail version.
And security, it's still a joke. The alternative is not Linux. It's still
not a viable option, it's just not quite ready for prime time, Mac OSX is!
There is only one version of Mac OSX and it's only $129, there's no slice
and dice games. Every new Mac will come with Mac OSX and iLife for multimedia.
Have you considered the benefits of Mac OSX? No, of course not. All you
can see is the price tag.
What does a comparable Dell cost? You wont do that, it's too much. It's
so much cheaper to build your own PC with Cheap after market parts. Well
have at it! Good luck getting it all to work. You might want to count your
time in to the equation and see what it is really costing you.
I will say, although the Apple monitors are slick and high quality, you will
probably never see me buy one. They are too high priced, and there are reasonable
alternatives. It's not the same situation with their computers. If more
people bought Apple computers I believe they would come down in price. To
some degree, it's supply and demand.
I've said it before, and I'll say it again, I think Apple computers are more
expensive than they should be, but you get what you pay for. The quality
is great, the designs are cool, and the OS makes it all worth it! Headache
free computing!!! That's worth the price of admission.
Apple IS the alternative to the monopoly and the tyranny of Microsoft.
Pick your poison!

so it's worth half? Anyway, maybe more. sounds like from what Gene says that
Apple may have abandoned their Digidesign'esque marketing mode. that's a
good thing.

I don't agree with this. I see trouble with Macs quite often.

Again, we disagree, but that's pretty normal for Mac and PC folks to
disagree about this.

this is definitely an issue that until recently hasn't reared it's ugly
head. Yes, windows is going in the same direction as Apple, which sucks,
IMHO. We'll see if it's a show stopper though. If it's just a matter of
upgrading hardware drivers, which any moron should be able to accomplish,
then it's not. If it's going to require all new hardware, then it is.

Worng James. I have been playing with it on a pretty regular basis down at
our Mac store here which is about a block from my downtown office. It's very
elegant, but I don't ened elegance for what I do with music. I need stripped
down to the bare bones functionality that will do one thing and do it well
and allow me to control exactly how it works, right dow to ripping the guts
out of the OS, bastardizing the registry and other things that *I* want to
do. If Vista disallows this, then I'll be screwed no matter what platform I
use.

I get them to work every time James. Some take longer than others to burn
in, depending on what specific task I have planned for it. I have never
built a computer that didn't work...exactly the way I wanted it to, with
nothing at all running on it that I didn't want. I know that's not the Mac
paradign. I prefer my own paradign.

the Dell 2407's aver very nice. I just picked up three of them. Worth a look
(pun intended ;o)

It will be interesting to see what the future brings. If the MS business
model starts resembling that of Apple (which looks like will happen) then
Apple may really look like a more viable evil.

They are all about "embrace and extend," to close things up so they are
the only source, then call it a "standard." It's a billion dollar idea,
and only criminal sometimes...

Fine, but you really should use a new Mac every day for a year and then get
back to me to tell me how bad it sucks. You'd have a whole different opinion.

Well, this may be news to you but MS has been trying to copy and rip off
Apple's Macintosh graphical user interface for more than 20 years. Vista's
look and feel is a blatant rip off of Mac OSX. It's nothing more than a
bad knock off of OSX. Vista is years behind Mac OSX development. The restriction
that are built in to Vista and the all the things I've read are disturbing.
I don't see why buying new hardware would bother you. The hardware you
buy is dirt cheap, and you do that anyways.

Playing with Mac OSX is not the same as using it on a daily basis for a year,
and really learning it.
Like I've said before, your stuck in a mind set that you have to tinker with
the OS in order to get good performance. You don't have to do that with
a Mac! That is what Mac users have been trying to tell you here for some
time now. There are no real performance problems with Macs. You will get
great performance right out of the box. You can tweak a mac a bit for performance,
but after that it's a waist of time. You can hack a Mac. You can strip
out the software,but it's unnecessary. You can easily get in to some of
the code through a terminal, but it's so unnecessary!
You don't have to worry about security on a mac like you do with a PC. You
can actually go on the internet with your audio work station and not be concerned
about viruses, worms, mole ware, spy ware, pop ups, or any of that shit!
And you don't have to load a bunch of software on your system to counter
all that stuff. No time, no hassle, no expense! Wanting to hack your Mac
for performance is like yanking the engine out of a Rolls Royce to drop in
a Ford 302.

You've had a lot of problems over the years which cost you time and money.
It's like building your own car from the ground up with cheap parts. Dropping
a 450 hp. engine in it, and saying it's faster than my new 385 hp Corvette.
Then going on to say that your is better because it was way cheaper to build
than my new 50K Corvette, and it's faster. Your missing all the safety features
and engineering that went in to the price tag. You need to account for your
time, to shop, build, find drivers, load software, fuss with, tweak, burn
in, and maintain your built PC. I'll bet it's a lot more time than you think
it is. There is the issue of all the cheap parts that have gone bad on you.
You need to account for all your time, expense and hassle to be fair.
If this is what you really WANT to do, more power to you.

Having worked on a bunch, I tell you that some of 'em break a lot.
My iBook is on it's 4th logic board. All under warranty (after
a threatened class-action)
I can also tell you that some do not break at all.
There are models that I have never seen a failure in. Even my
little el-cheapo Mini here has been flawless. The Blue and White
G3's don't break, the old Quadras we used for mastering don't
break, the 9600's used for Avid don't break, and the new G5's
seem to be pretty darn solid.
I am sure there are PC's just as good, but the price will equal
a Mac in my experience. IM-ever-so-HO the average quality
of Macs is better than the average PC, but then they should be
at these prices huh? That don't mean you won't get one
you want to drop-kick...
I just don't care about platform wars until some d*ck (and there
have been many over the years) says "Apple is finished".
They've been saying that, and drooling while they speak, for
15 years now.
I don't care about the box, (till it breaks) I care about the music...
