No personal experience - but my current business partner tried the onyx
firewire mixer when it came out with horrid, disastrous results in quality
control problems. It locked up the mixer audio and only output a loud
RRRRRRRR sound right before a show, never to return to working order.. new,
out of the box a few days prior. Ended up going back and being replaced by a
Soundcraft fully analog deal. Hopefully they've worked out that problem by
now.
a.. 30-in, 34-out audio/MIDI interface with 12 Onyx preamps
a.. Two instrument inputs
a.. Eight balanced line outputs
a.. Dual stereo control room outputs
a.. Four independent headphone outputs
a.. S/PDIF and AES/EBU I/O
a.. Dual ADAT I/O
a.. Two FireWire ports
a.. Includes Tracktion 2 and Final Mix software
The key words I don't see here are *works with 3rd party apps*, *latency
free hardware monitoring*, *warranty coverage and period* and *ASIO*.. or
even a minimum host computer recommendation. Mac? PC? minimum RAM/Hard
Drive/CPU/Firewire port spec?
Surely some or all of that is at the Mackie.com site, but stinkwater hasn't
done a very good job of translating that info to potential buyers.
I'd also recommend doing some research on the firewire interface... if it's
DICE, then it's nothing special and you can expect normalcy in it's latent
behaviour (that means, a cheapo tascam/M Audio unit will likely be just as
fast, or maybe faster, since it's got less traffic because of less
channels). This is why (Chris Ludwig... correct me if I'm off here man) a
RME firewire will kill the run-of-the-mill FW interfaces in latency times.

Thanks Aaron for pointing out key things that I had not consider. It is way
past time to up-grade my pre-amps and I'am looking to get all I can for the
"bang for my bucks". I'm looking for an 8 channel pre-amp for live drums,
that also has D/I for bass, D/I for guitar, and vocals.
The Focusrite 828 is the other unit I was thinking of buying.
Any recomendation. Budget $3000 (Does not Have to be 8 Channels)
