help
everything is freezing up
everything is going wrong since i reloaded my software 2.1
....
originally someone helped me
with new cinfig files.

this is what i got now:
dusk i/o = 64
disk cache = 10 mb
prerview = 2048 kb

what do i change so the thing isn't stopping all the time?

So you're getting streaming errors?

Disk I/O should usually be higher rather than lower. Try 128 as a start point.

Personally I have:

Disk I/O =128
Disk Cache = 30 Meg
Overview Cache = 4096

It all depends on your system, how big it is (bigger needs higher numbers).
I have a two card system and those settings work fine for me. Don't remember
the last disk error I had. Maybe none on this system. It's been said that
your disk cache should allow for double the number of tracks that you're
really using.

If you're on a single card system the setting may be ok, maybe... except
I'd up the Disk I/O first to 128.

What is your system? How many cards?

Can you verify that your eds card(s) are on the same IRQ and that they are
NOT sharing with anything else? On boot up you should see what the bios
is putting them on.

In bios turn off parallel, serial, usb ports till you get it figured out.

thanks--
my system is antiquated-- about eight years old
with one card in a G3. i had similar issues when i
first began working with paris and the default configuration
and someone on this newsgroup, i think chuck duffy, gave me some
suggestions that ultimately cleared up the problem. at this point i'm
very nearly at the end of a lengthy project, ten songs with an average of
12 trks and a whole lot of submixes all of which
need final mixes, and suddenly my computer does not want to comply... a little
scary... the cursor stops midway through the tracks, the music continues
to play, and the only way to stop it is to force quit the program, and then
force the mac to restart.

i'll try your suggestions.

I doubt that it is an IRQ conflict, since nothing has been changed... if
all else fails i'll surely work with your suggestion...

I seem to remember there being some issue with the disk cache size of the
G3 itself. Is this correct? system profiler is telling
me that I have 128K in the disk cache at the moment. Should this be changed?

Hey JP! Here is what I recommend you try.

You will need to know how much memory is available for Paris. Do a "about
this Mac" from the Apple menu to see how much memory is available for Paris

Go to the Paris program where ever it's located, and click once on the Paris
icon just to high light it. Do a "get info", Go file> Get info>memory.
Allocate more memory to the Paris program, type in a higher number In the
preferred memory box.

Try reloading the program again.

If that does not work, you may have an Extensions conflict. Check the Paris
Q&A web page to see Mac extension settings. Create an optimized extension
set just for Paris. Or you could just start with the system extensions and
paris extensions. You may have to test different extensions, by adding and
rebooting.

Sorry,

Try giving the program more memory first, then if that doesn't work, then
try reloading the program.

hey, it's all coming back to me-- i remember doing this when i first got
paris
years ago. unfortunately i've lost all the initial documentation
i started at the time. your recommendation sounds like the
way to go./

more memory allocated to the program.

Don't feel foolish, this is the number one reason people think Macs crash.
It's because they do, if you don't give the programs enough memory. Everybody
forgets this. Me included.
