Back in the late '80's, I was photographer for a regional band that
was managed by a friend of mine.

The band released one cd and did pretty well with it, and then egos
and substances got in the way and the band ended up splitting, owing
my friend a ton of money for the cd.

However, I remembered that there was a second recording session for a
followup album that was never released.

My friend just called me.... he just found the original master tapes
for that second session! He had completely forgotten about them.

We thought we should mix the remaining seven songs and make a "lost
sessions" disc, if for no other reason than we'd finally like to hear
those songs finished.

Do any of you have contacts that would help me get two reels of 1"
16-track Ampex transferred to sd2 or aiff or wav? I told my buddy
that I'd be happy to take a shot at mixing, but it's hard to stuff
those reels into the disc slot on my pc.....

It would be useful if the studio were in the Chicago/southern
Michigan/Milwaukee area. Or, I could ship the tapes if you can advise
me on the safest way to do that.

We don't want to spend a lot on this, since there's no guarantee on
how many, if any of these we would sell if I manage to produce
something decent. It's mainly for old times' sake and because one of
those songs was one they used to do live and I always wanted a
recording of it.

You can post here or email me offlist at pbraun at ctgonline dot org.

Thanks.!

Yeah, Cuj, I was just thinking... I don't know of ANY
widespread 1"/16 format other than Tascam. Fostex had a
1/2"/16, and IIRC made ONE model of a 1"/16, but not for very
long, and I don't think there were very many produced... ISTR
that one might've had Dolby "C". I know some of their 1/2" 16-
tracks did.

PB, I "THINK" there's still someone in my area that has that
setup - it's not someone I know real well, and in fact, it's a
church (if they still even have their recording setup, and of
course, still have their Tascam rig) but keep me in mind if you
can't find someone as a "for sure", and I can certainly check &
see for you.

Thanks, guys.

I'll see my buddy again on Wednesday -- I'll pull out the session
sheets and see if it lists the speed or NR settings.

I'll post up Wednesday night.

Hey Paul

I just posted this over at the Womb

There are a number of tape heads still hang there and should be able to
provide several leads
