Mike,
I'm running 44 analog inputs and 44 analog outputs and 9 x stereo pairs of
digital outputs.
I do not use patchbays any more. I've got 22 outboard preamps interfaced
with 22 of the analog inputs.
I've got 22 outboard analog processors interfaced with rest of the analog
inputs and 22 of the analog outputs. I've got 16 (8 x stereo pair) more analog
outs dedicated to various cue send scenarios.
I've got 7 x stereo FX processors interfaced digitally, six of which are
being reclocked/SRC'ed in real time so that they can be used in 88.2k projects
if I need to work at higher sample rates.
This is all running an an RME Multiface, MADI and AES32 card in a DAW that
Chris ludwig built that is also interfacing 4 x UAD-1 cards. It runs at 1.5
ms with plugins instantiated withut even breathing hard and all preamps and
outboard FX are available to every track in the project without my having
to do any more than click a mouse.
I have a motorized control surface that intergates nicely with this DAW.
It is the most stable, powerful and ergonomically friendly DAW I have ever
used. I doub6t I could be tempted back to any proprietary DAW, even PTHD.
Mixing natively isn't hard o do at all. It's all in the bussing. Now that
I've got my head around mixing natively, I am getting mixes that I am just
as happy with as I was with Paris.
Having said that, the most powerful and satisfying DAW "scenario" I ever
used was when I had 40 x tracks of Cubase 3x being lightpiped via Creamware
interfaces into 40 ADAt inputsof 4 x MECS. The available options and flexibility
of this setup were pretty unbelievable and being able to process a totally
delay compensated mix in Cubase with UAD-1 plugins and then lightpipe this
whole thing into Paris for additional "phattening" was tres monstrous. The
clocking gotcha's however were a show stopper. Had it not been for those,
I might still be using Paris in this way.
If there were no submix limitations in Paris and it it had PDC, I'd be tempted
to load it back up.
Keep up the fine work man. You really are doing some great things.
;)
