If you feel like being a guinea pig, you could try adding /INTAFFINITY to
your boot.ini file rather than disabling hyperthreading.
The boot.ini file lives at c:\boot.ini. You may have to enable "show hidden
files and folder" and/or turn off "hide protected operating system files"
to see it by going to "tools - folderoptions - view" and making the changes.
Here's the contents of my boot.ini for reference:
[boot loader]
timeout=30
default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(2)\WINDOWS
[operating systems]
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(2)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Professional"
/fastdetect /NoExecute=OptIn /INTAFFINITY
C:\ = "Microsoft Windows"
Good luck!
