I have a somewhat large great room in my house and I'm looking to cut down
on reflections when I record drums in there. Would something like these
absorb enough sound/reflections to be useful? Any other recommendations?

At best they'll cut back on the high freq reflections and maybe some upper
mids....this may do the trick...see if you can rent some from your local
moving company before you buy as it looks like these ones will be on Ebay
for a while

I have quite a few of these that I use for exactly this kind of thing. They
won't work for LF stuff, but they definitely will absorb the HF/HMF
reflections..

I'm agreeing with Don... those things, while fairly thick, are
also fairly lightweight. Not enough density to make that much
of a difference across the board with regard to bandwidth.

If you're looking for a solution that you can hang or drape,
then theater curtains (usually these are VERY heavy) work well,
IMO... I did some production work at a PBS tv station some
years ago & they used these for studio partitions, so I can
personally attest to their effectiveness. Only problem is,
they're so thick & heavy you have to have a very well-
reinforced hanging system. Also, while they're very expensive
to have made, if you can find someone who does want to get rid
of a set, you can often get them for next to nothing,
because if a theater or a school has replaced theirs, the old
ones are usually just sitting around collecting dust.

Check the TV stations in your area that have a newscast or
other large studio area... it was a very common old-school
method of partitioning one portion of the set from another,
before many stations went to the "open newsroom" on-air format
that's much more prevalent these days.

However, if you ARE just looking to cut down on some
reflections, flutter echos, etc., from walls & whatnot, IMO a
much more attractive alternative to the moving blankets would be
something like this (go to this site & look for "wallhangings"
under "Products"):

http://www.elpasosaddleblanket.com/

Now, those guys are wholesale-only online, but if you see
something you like, I can go to their retail outlet here & buy
it for you & have it shipped. A few of these things on your
walls will look a helluva lot better than moving blankets.

O'yeah.....I forgot to add that what I do when treating a toom with these
is, wherever possible, to hang two at a time with an air space between them.

Thanks everyone for the replies.

DJ, I'm looking to cut the high flutter and mids.
Sounds like the ticket. What do you use to hang them?
Since this is my living room, I need to be able to put them up and take them
down easily.

I'd think a few well placed grommets, shower curtain hooks and a nice rod
suspended from the ceiling would do the trick nicely.

You might want to consider framed Corning 703 panels wrapped in a nice
fabric and mounted on stands for portability. Definitely more expensive but
will do a much better job of taming the highs and lows than packing blankets
and if you take your time making them they could be mounted on your walls
and be quite "attractive"

(I don't believe I just said that)

Check around your area for commercial office auctions and pick up some
free standing office dividers. They will be cheap and do a good job.
If you get creative, you can make longer legs to get them off the
ground. They can then be placed flat up against a wall when not in use.

I've got the blankets outfitted with grommets. I have those wire shower
curtain hoops looped through the grommets and I've got wooden dowels
mounted on brackets at strategic points, some double mounted to create an
air space.
