What part of New Mexico are you thinking about? I live on the
western tip of Texas, bordering southern new Mexico, so I know a
decent amount about that area of the state... Las Cruces, Santa
Teresa, etc. Been to Albuquackie & Santa Fe a coupla times, so I
know a little bit, but definitely less, about those parts.

I live in Durango, Colorado, about 30 miles from the New Mexico border. I'm
familiar with Chama/Espanola/Santa Fe/Taos/Farmington.........have often
visited Albuquerque. If you're looking for a big city and all that is
available in a big city, Albuquerque is as close as you're going to get,
with Santa Fe coming in second.. Santa Fe and Taos are very artsy'fartsy and
expensive and everything is made of dirt. Chama is a beautiful, tiny town in
the mountains-very isolated (that's why it's beautiful). Espanola is about
30 miles north of Santa Fe and about 45 miles west of Taos and everuything
is made of dirt, but it's reasonably priced dirt instead of expensive dirt.
Farmington is due south of here. It's a small city located in the high
desert and the main industry there is natural gas drilling (and everything
is made of dirt)

O'yeah.........I'm also pretty familiar with Gallup. If you native American
culture, you will find it everywhere in northern New Mexico, but if you like
isolation and native american culture........lots of native american
culture.....go to Gallup. The old route 66 runs through Gallup and it's only
about 1/12 hours west of Albuquerque and 2 hours from Flagstaff AZ (a cool
town, IMO) ............and in Gallup.......you guessed it........everything
is made of dirt..........reasonable priced dirt.............with lots of big
rocks.........really big rocks.

A friend of mine likes to describe Albuquerque as: "a lot like
El Paso, but not as sophisticated", which if you know anything
about either place, is not a very complimentary statement about
either city.

Probably: "A lot like El Paso, but more boring" is a better
description.

:D

In Santa Fe there aren't but a couple of buildings in the whole city that
are over two stories tall. If you like houses made out of dirt, New Mexico
is the place. Personally, I like that kind of architecture, but it's still
dirt.

I found a bitchin' genuine unrestored Route 66 Motel in Albuquerque
and stayed a night, so I loved it.

Getting caught in a NM thunderstorm
lacework of lightning from horizon to horizon,
the smell of electricity and red, wet, dirt in the air
so much rain coming down the wipers couldn't keep up
we had to pull off the road,

great memory...
