Taking the plunge into PC PARIS - request for advice [message #99963] |

Hi all. The plans for my current PARIS-based DAW system weren't *really*
supposed to kick into gear until I opened the studio doors in January. But
given all of Mike's progress I'm champing at the bit to make the jump now,
to install PARIS on a PC - even a rudimentary, low-cost PC - and worry about
a final rig later after the inevitable studio setup costs are sorted out. I
can transfer the PC experience I've gained directly into decisions about a
new rig later.
Which brings me to this ad in my local Craigslist - what do you think for
$150?
17" LG studioworks E700B CRT Monitor
17" 777B Case W/400W
LG 16DVD/32x10x40 Combo
AMD Athlon 2200XP (1.83Mghz)
1GB DDR400 PC3200
64MB MSI GeForce4 MX440 w/TVout
asus A7N8X nvidia nforce 2 ultra 400
seagate 250GB HD 7200RPM 8MB Buffer
labtec pc webcam
1.44 floppy drive
[I know I'd put in a beefier PSU right away, and sooner or later replace the
video card with a dual-head of some description. I'd eventually get rid of
the monitor, get a dual-head KVM switcher (ironically even the cheapest
dual-head switchers seem to cost more than this computer) and share my Mac's
keyboard, mouse and twin 19" LCDs so both can be accessed with a
button-push.]
So is this a sensible low-cost way get me up and running, and in the PARIS
PC game?

Hi Kerry,
My only suggestion is that Windows XP's file caching system is flawed and
works a lot better with 1.5 GB+ of RAM. It's designed for file serving,
and it will cache files using up to 1GB of RAM, even if it means swapping
out program code (like the PARIS app) to do it. I found PARIS bogged down
because of this after a little while of use. At 2GB, it's not a problem.
I hope this helps.

Perfect, at least means this means I've got little enough RAM to buy - I'll
stick another gig in there. Thanks!

HI Kerry,
You also need to make sure that you by the ram in pairs so that ram operates in dual channel mode.
So 2x 1 gig DDR400 PC3200 ram is what you will need.

Kerry,
This is essentially what I am running, with a widescreen Geforce dual video
card, 2GB of memory and second DVI monitor on PARIS 3. It works great with
the one EDS card system I have.

Chris,
I may be way off, but Won't this (2x1G DC mode) only be an effective, though
faster, one Gig memory?
