Best Current Chipset for Audio [message #102970]

I was just curious to know what is the "recommrnded" chipset for audio
applications.

I knew way back the nForce3 was the way to go, but I might be building a new
workstaion soon, and I want to be prepared.

With Mike's new drivers, there is no recommended chipset at the moment - recommended chipsets may be a thing of the past, at least insofar as recommended for PARIS specifically. A lot of what we were trying to get around with specific chipsets has been solved.

It's first full day of testing, but the ASUS M2N-E mobo is working beautifully here so far with Athlon AM2 X2 4200+ processor and 4gb of Corsair RAM.

HI Stephen,
Are you wanting to run Paris on newer hardware or is this for non Paris use?

Heya Chris - this is OT, but are you thinking of doing anything with the VirtuaVia boxes? It wouldn't just be of benefit for PARIS users, the UAD-1 users seem to be loving them too.

Even better to have the option of getting them pre-installed with a beefy PSU in a "minimum needed profile" case - maybe there's a "lunchbox" or rack format case somewhere that'd fit the 4-card requirement without wasting a full ATX case's worth of space. I'd support organizing some sort of "group buy" on that.

Hi Chris,

I was planning to give it a go as a Paris rig ( I have a small setup now - I
traded a lot in to Eastcoast Music a while back). If worked well with the
new drivers that Mike did, I was planning to get a few more EDS cards. If I
didn't like it, I was going to install Nuendo 4 on it (which I might do
anyway).

HI Kerry,
A rack case that has proper air flow for the Paris would need to be at least 3 or 4U.
You would be able to make a 4U much quieter than a 3U or smaller.
Most all of the 3U and under cases will only take non ATX power supplies which are designed for server systems.
These power supplies are obnoxiously loud and not field replaceable.
You can't run down to Best Buy to get a Non-ATX power supply in a pinch.

The only people that need this right now are Paris people IMHO.
The biggest concern when doing this for Paris cards is power and heat.
There are no "lunch box" or small tower or small rack cases that will provide this.
A rack or full tower with the proper power supply and quiet case fans would run around $350.00 not including the VirtuaVia stuff.
The length of the EDS cards will limit you to Rack Mount and Full towers.
The Full Tower case would need to support E-ATX in order to fit a Paris card.
