Hi Chris,
I'm running a single CPU Athlon MP 2800 for my Paris rig, and wanted to
upgrade my Nuendo machine (presently running 2 Athlon MP 1900).
I have one RME HDSP 5296 in my Nuendo computer, and have plans on getting
the Lynx AES16 as well. I'm running running one TC Powercore Firewire
between the two computers, with a PowerCore Unplugged in each. The Nuendo
computer is running Windows XP pro. I aslo am running GigaStuiodo from the
Nuendo computer. Primarily, the Nuendo computer will be mixing and editing.
I was thinking Opteron CPU since a lot of music pros I've been reading about
have had great success with them, but I'm not realy too familiar with them.
Do you know what, if any, benefits that I would see going opteron vs Athlon
64 X2? If I did go with Opeteron, should I go dual core? Do you have any
different suggestions? How about mobos?

Actually, Kim, I'm using a dual Athon just fine. It's just the C16 code that
doesn't like two processors, and I don't have any.
All the best,

Hi Stephen,
Ahh Ok good. Glad you not trying to get Paris to run on it.
CPU performance between the same clock speed X2 and Opteron chips is
pretty much neck and neck. The benefits on the dual OPteron machines,
multiple PCI busses, faster memory performance. YOu will also be able to
use up to 16 gigs of ram which is nice. You will also be able to use
dual core Opteron chips in it so you will have 4 cpus.
Nuendo will not be able to use the Lynx and RME at the same time so I'm
not sure what you plan is with that. If you occasionally need to use AES
you would be better of just getting a RME DD4 or DD8 format converter
for that. Also expect Gigastudio to give you some headaches also sense
it doesn't properly support dual cpus. It will work but I would expect
so growing pains. The TC should be fine with this setup.
I would not do the Dual core Opterons is you are using Gigastudio. If
you don't use Giga then go for it is you can afford it. NUendo will use
all four cpus.
The only motherboards for the Opterons worth getting are the TYan s2885
and s2895 models. If you are gonn use duak core cous then you will wanna
get the Zalman 9500 heat sinks. Also only use you memory in groups of 4
i.e., 2 gigs = 4x 512, 4 gigs = 4x 1024 ram. YOu will get NUMA memory
support which give you 10gigs/sec instead of the normal 5 gigs.
Oh and at least a 550 watt EPS power supply. YOu also have to use XP SP2
on the OPterons to get the most out of them for the memory support.

Thanks Chris,
Actually I ordered a Opteron Dual core 165, not a X2-dual core. The Opteron
should work, since it's a 939 socket??

HI Lamont,
That chip will work on the 939 mobos but you will still have to make
sure you update the BIOS.

Hi Chris,
First of all, thanks so very much for taking the time to enlighten me - it
is GREATLY appreciated.
I checked out the Tyan mobos, and like the looks of the S2895, but am unsure
if that is the way to go due to the 2 PCI-E slots. I am extremely out of
the loop with PCI-E, except to know that it allows for killer graphics. I
assume that PCI-E is not backwards compatible with PCI. I just don't wan't
to be losing out on slots if I don't have to, or have to put everything into
my Magma chassis. Then again, I don't have to install a SCSI320 or Sata
card or USB 2.0 or Firewire Card, so I guess I should count myself lucky. I
guess your're damn if you do, damned if you don't. :)

Hi Stephen,
PCI-E is/will be the replacement for PCI. It has a much higher bandwidth
than PCI or PCI-X. YOu'll mainly see high powered devices like video,
audio and drive controllers being used for PCI-E slots. Magma is
releaseing a PCI-E to PCI card for use with the current Magmas. It still
in the testing stages though. Most all sound card and DSP card makers
will see PCI-E version of current stuff and/or new devices all together
by the end of the year.
I would advice getting the version of the boartd without the on board
SCSI if you really need to have SCSI us your card or get one of the new
PCI-E based ones. The on board SATA controller work great.
