Amen Don, after years of chasing the "Magic box" I spent $300.00 on some
Fibrex insulation, fabric, wood frame and staples and a weekend's work.
Built 16 - 2' x 4' x 4" panels, hung em mostly in the corners of my
tracking and mixing rooms. Huge difference in the low end, much tighter and
defined, less muddy. The best $300.00 I ever spent in the studio.

Rob, so how do I treat my high ceilinged, plaser lath, victorian parlor,
with crown mouldings and such, without it looking sucky, like it's jerry
rigged? Actually the sound of the room is pretty decent, but there are some
problems. Not sure where to start.

Rich - are you reasonably "handy"? Can you do, say, light carpentry? This
can be done cheap and still look great.

Don I agree, your right, I also believe a good analyzer like the SMART system
can certainly help adjust a room for better acoustics and speaker placement,
etc. I think it would still be interesting to see if you could get your
local dealer to rent you the KRK magic box to see if it helps at all. It'd
be nice to try before you buy, if it actually improved you mixes it might
be worth the money. In the end your right, no box is going to fix bad acoustics.
Good advice, start with the room treatment first.

As Kerry said if your handy grab some 3" thick OC 703, (8 batts minimum)
wrap them in some nice fabric and stack a pair end on end in each corner of
the room...dollars to donuts your low end will tighten up significantly. Add
some more along the walls (at the first mirror reflection points) between
you and your speakers and your stereo imaging should gain some clairity.
You can use frames, base stands (like Deej) wall mount them, set them on
milk crates for height do what ever looks good to you but either way the
more you add the better the room will sound (up to a point)
Shooting your room with ETF or other similar diagnostic programs will help
you ascretain what's going on in your room and is handy to have

One addition - for Canadians, grab Roxul Rockboard 60 instead of OC 703.
Even better acoustically, a fraction of the price.

Kerry, Don, have you ever heard of, or used a product called SafeNSound,
doesn't appear too rigid? Looks like Roxul AFB Mineral Wool is not rigid
either and will collapse, whereas Owens Corning 703 is rigid. Hey, just want

Safe N Sound and AFB are very similar with respect to sag... great for
building studio walls, but a bit of a pain for building treatment.

Roxul RXL 40 is what you're after if you want close to the OC 703 specs

I did my "between the studs" studio soundproofing in SafeNSound. It's
residential soundproofing insulation, and at $36 a bale it's great stuff at
a killer price. It's designed to friction fit between studs, and would be
pretty floppy for wall covering unless you framed it.
Rockboard is a better choice for the panels - it's a rigid product with very
similar characteristics to 703. It's not all that easy to source but a
contractor buddy found it for me at a place called Crossroads C & I in
Burnaby, BC.

That would be cool, Aaron. I've been contemplating that, too. In the
mean time I picked up an LED color changing light designed for
video/film location lighting and it also makes a handy mood light in the
studio.

Kerry, I think I'm just going to purchase a few of these from Auralex, they
seem reasonable and look pretty neat. There's a weath of products from this
company, some of it pretty expensive though. What do you think?

I'm of mixed mind on those. They do work well, and they look pro. On the
other hand, they're far more expensive, they mainly suit 90 degree angle
corners (my space has more of an arched ceiling) and I don't particularly
*like* that look myself. I decided to go with built-ins, but it will come
down to your budget and tastes.

I have these in the corners of my room, and while they work pretty well, if
I had it to do over again I would instead install micro traps from Real Traps.
