I've never owned a 442, but the manual seems to indicate that should be completely fine. I don't think you can record the inputs of both 442s into one submix simultaneously, you'd record eight tracks simultaneously by recording four tracks into one submix and four into another (but that's just me guessing based on what I've read).
Actually, I'd wonder if you could record twelve tracks simultaneously by taking advantage of the SP/DIF ins of both 442s too (I can do it with the MEC). All you'd need is external A/D convertors - if you need extra inputs and one of the sources you're recording is eg. a keyboard, guitar POD or preamp with SP/DIF out, just use SP/DIF instead of using up analog ins. I can't recall for sure, but if memory serves, I might once have actually used a DAT machine in "record pause" when I was pinched for an extra pair of inputs.
