Can i run PARIS in a laptop? [message #106138]

Finally dusting off the old home studio after years of neglect.. Still have PARIS on my old circa 2000 desktop.

I have the MEC and 1 EDS card. Im hoping I can buy a new laptop and run PARIS on that, if I use a PCI adapter? What should i know before i shop?

Any help is greatly appreciated,

Kerry had sent me some info on the PCI adapter awhile back. Couldn't find it. Maybe he'll chime in. I'd like to know about this too.

Hi Mark, and welcome! Yep, it's good times for PARIS users, there are a lot more good options nowadays than there were six or seven years back.

You can use a Magma chassis to pull this off, although users are reporting that the much less expensive VirtuaVia adapters work perfectly. It appears you'll have to contact VirtuaVia directly - you don't want the straight PCIe - PCI version found here or here, you'll have to get exactly the same thing but with the adaptor cable appropriate for your particular laptop (PCMCIA, ExpressCard etc). Let us know what you discover!

would the following item work?

i see it is much cheaper than the magma products, but still pricey.. almost $300 US plus who knows what for shipping...
4 slots seems like overkill. i did not find a 1 slot product on the virtuavia site, but i will email them to ask.

although i should wonder does the EDS-1000 with its daughterboard attached fit within a 1 slot dimension, or would i need extra room anyway? hmmm

sorry, didn't mean to be so lazy.. i just went and took a look inside at the EDS-1000 (first time in years hehe) and i see that it takes up only 1 slot width-wise, but i had forgotten how LONG it is.. it is considered a "full" length PCI card.. so that means only the (same price luckily!) "long box" version by virtuavia will work, which is here:

i sent an email to inquire about units with fewer slots (and hopefully fewer dollars!) so ill update if hear anything.

i would think the cards might get too hot? but i don't know

That box won't work for PARIS, 38 watts is a fraction of what you should have. See if you can get the kit version but with a laptop cable, and put it in an ATX case with a power supply of your own choosing.
