We are currently experiencing a shit load of crashes especially on startup
and I've recently thought that going back to WIN98se is the way to go.

I'm back in xp now and working good. I have an Asus mx800 MB and the manual
was wrong on irqs. Make SURE you are using slots that are not shared with
other shit, otherwise life totally sucks. What MB and setup do you have,
ram, etc.
