Just got this today, testing with a blue bottle (b6).. holy cow!

Really rich harmonic overtones, wonderful sounding preamp.

(Other pre's here are GT Vipre, API512, Mono Gammas..)

After dinner I'm going to run the Wunder CM7 through it to compare..

Cheers,

TC

I have a Seventh Circle Audio pre coming - maybe as soon as next week. It'll
have one channel of N72 (Neve clone) and two of C84 (Millennia). We should
get 'em together and try 'em out.

For sure, I'd love to do that. I was checking the SCA out after you told
me about them. Seems like they would be in the same sonic ballpark,
based on the design of both units.. MA5 is based on the 1073 design,
from what I understand.

I did some more testing with the CM7 (M7 cap). I prefer the bottle
paired with the MA5 on my voice (CM7 is a little darker sounding). The
MA5 is maybe a bit more forward sounding than the Vipre, but I didn't
run the Vipre through the gamut of different rise times and impedance
settings last night (although it was set to med fast).

Both are great units and have their own mojo. I preferred the CM7 paired
with the Vipre over the MA5, probably because I can get a wider range of
settings on it that better match that particular mic. The MA5 is rich
and forward, although with the 28k switch engaged, it appears to lose
some of the overtones/harmonic grit, but that might be useful on certain
sources. I'll have a better idea also once I track some acoustic
guitars. The CM7 is excellent on acoustic.

All really great stuff, and it just shows that at that level of quality
it's really all about having a variety of brushes and paints..

Cheers,

TC

I'd love to hear a comparison between the MA5 and the SCA N72! Whenever you
guys have time to get together. How's tomorrow? ;-)

LOL - I have to get the N72 (and the C84s) first; they're being built and
should be here in a few weeks. They'll be put to use tracking vocals and
acoustic guitar the day they arrive.

What? You meant you didn't build them yourself? Whatta you lazy or
something? ;-)

I was going to say "or something", but then I figured "lazy" covered it just
fine :D. My closet is the Secret Graveyard Of Projects Begun And Abandoned.

Nah, I thought about doing it for a while, but it's pretty mission-critical,
and that's not a place I want to do my first real in-depth PCB soldering.
Better an EE than me, I tell ya.
