Hey, it happens.

Can I not use two 8-in cards and an adat card at the same time?

I just plugged my new 8-in card into the mec tonight and fired it up.

My plan was to use the 8in cards for, well, inputs and then use the
adat for a recording feed to the guy making the cd-now masters for
Sunday's concert.

But when I opened the bay and the MEC modules, I could see all three,
but the adat card had hijacked one set of 8 inputs as well as the
outputs, and I couldn't find any way to turn that off and just have it
assigned to the outputs.

Is that just not possible? If that's the case, then the adat card
comes out. But don't you guys use adat to pipe to effects and stuff?

Thanks.

You can fill ALL the slots in the MEC, but you can only
select *two* modules at a time to be accessable for Input or
output. This means you can not pull two inputs off of an
adat card while using 14 analog inputs... that would require
having three cards active.

Ahhh. Then I'm going to play with the bay and figure out how to pull
the adat card from the config and drop the second 8in in its place.

Thanks.

Paul,

You CAN have 16 inputs (2 8-input analog modules) active AND the 8-ouput
ADAT module active, because the input segment and output segment of each MEC
Module are treated independently.

The 16 input blocks and 16 output blocks are logically separate, meaning
that you CAN use 16 analog inputs and feed 8 outputs via ADAT. Notice that
the ADAT block can live on the input side AND / OR the output side
simultaneously.

Hope this helps.

Sandy

I'll try that again tonight - I thought I could do that, but couldn't
figure out how to remove just the adat input side and leave the output
side.

This is why I'm screwing with this stuff NOW and not Sunday
afternoon...

I messed with it some more this evening, and found that I could drag
the adat IN block out of the assignment while still leaving the adat
OUT patched in. Then I dropped the other 8in card into the second set
of inputs, and life is good.

Now - adat optical question. I patched the mixer mains to module 1 &2
since I only need two channels out for this project. I've never used
adat lightpipe before, only toslink optical. If I plug an optical
cable from the adat card into, say, the optical in of a cd recorder,
will it see the two channels, or is it a completely different data
stream protocol and I need something that speaks lightpipe to pick the
two channels out of the stream?

The adat protocol it *completely* different from TOSlink and
nothing will be recognized.

That's kinda what I thought. However, I believe my friend's rig has
an adat-compatible interface in the chain before the cd-r, so we
should be good.

Thanks.

Dave,

I got Paris ADAT modules to operate via spdif Toslink on channels 1& 2.
