Just to mention something vaguely about recording for a change, I finally
got my Langevin DVC a few days ago and last night and got it set up. Used
it with (essentially) a Mojave MA-200, a Blue Baby Bottle, some SE Electronics
pencil condensers and an Octava. In the legendary words of SSC, the DVC fails
to suck. Not as fast as the Syteks, but still fast and solid state sounding
in a good way. As the manual describes, the opto limiter isn't really suited
to drum overheads (I tried anyway) because it's a little quick to grab the
transient of a drum hit, but on everything else, from acoustic guitars to
bass DI and especially vocals it really is a nice box. For the money it's
quite a deal, I'm guessing pretty much all of the overdubs will be going
though it.

use it tracking toms, some vocals. it's a nice piece...like you said
for the money.

I thought exactly the same thing, but to be honest my guess is that it might
not be the right thing. Maybe just as a pre, but I prefer to compress the
kick and snare just a little on the way to disk. The opto limiter in the
Langevin seems really, really fast. So I'm guessing it will stomp on the
transient a little more than one might like. I will try it, but I'm not terribly
optimistic.
Great for pretty much everything else, though,

If the compressors are that fast, it may not be good for
that kick/snare "Boom-CRACK!", but it might be good for "Whump-
SPLAT!" - a la' the comps in an SSL desk. That's what I was
curious about.

Interesting question, yes that is. Maybe use the comps at mixdown instead
for the (expertly described) 'whump-splat'? That's an interesting idea there,

I wasn't referring to using it across the 2-buss, or even on
mixdown, necessarily - I was referring to the channel comps in
an SSL desk... you can flatten (or maybe I should say "splatten"
LOL) out a snare pretty good with those. I was just thinking
of tracking kick & snare with the DVC with the compressors
engaged & see how that sounded.
I remember Fletcher once saying that SSL used dbx VCA's in
compressors for the 4000-series consoles, but I've never heard
a dbx compressor act like those. In fact, it's easy to take
that "splat" too far and end up with a snare that sounds like
you're just hitting a piece of notebook paper.

I'm with you Neil. I'd never use the opto comp in the DVC on the two bus at
mixdown. I was thinking of tracking the kick and snare with little or no
compression and then trying to get some splat from the DVC when mixing. Or
I'll try it with a little compression when tracking. Nevertheless, it's not
a happy critter with overheads, even at very light compression settings.

I owned one for a while, and sold it to get into Great River and Purple
Audio stuff. It's a cool box for the money, but I thought the preamp lacked
mojo, the EQ wasn't versatile enough, and almost never liked the compressor.
Not trying to be difficult, just providing my perspective...
