First, the Transperformance predates this by quite a bit. So the article
is wrong and Gibson is knowingly wrong. Shame on them for making that
claim of "first."

Second, Gibson is just using the tech from Tronical:
http://www.tronical.com/
You can put the Tronical system into your own guitar, although the
officially supported models are fairly limited right now. LPs and
strats, basically.
Or, if you can do your own basic tuning, the various Line 6 Variaxen let
you dial up instant alternative tunings via DSP for less $$. Not quite
as good as actually tuning the strings to alt tunings but very usable,
and faster.

Yep. And they claim the tuners are lighter than some common
non-motorized tuners.
However, if it has to have enough string wound around the tuners to
allow alternate tunings, I wonder how well it would stay in tune while
playing, with all that extra string length wound around the tuner posts?
Anyhoo, it'd be fun to try out.
The next step would be to use those individual string piezos on the
bridge to drive a variax circuit while also using the pitch detectors it
already has to drive a MIDI output...I need a guitar like that or I will
die... ;^)

now what is it again that you need???......a Variax that will tuen itself
and pitch to midi???......

I have a friend here who is a luthier and I have been thinking of getting
him to help me gut this thing and transplant it's organs and neck into a
Variax. I suppose that while we're at it, we could add the Tronical and a
Roland GK 3
