how do you know when your CPU is Shot!? [message #80837]

the computer turns on.

fans go... power light comes on... hd light comes on.

but i can't even get to the bios.

i try inserting my W98 Cd to re-install... nothing.

i plugged the drives into antoher computer... they are fine.

i switched out the mobo... same problem.

is the processor shot??

Got another video card you could try? PS also a possibiliy - I had the 12v
output go out with similar symptoms.

It could also be your ram..... does your motherboard have a diagnostic
l.e.d. display?

Also try resetting/clearing the CMOS - your MOBO Manual should
( or at least "may") tell you how -it's going to be a little
jumper you have to move while the power's off, then move back
to where it was, then power up again. I had a similar thing
happen myself once, that might be it - it was in my case.

dont have another video card to try.

what is a diagnostic led?

i just get the power light.

tried the cmos thing.

HI Jeremy,

If you are getting no video signal at all then most likely video card,
ram or power supply. If you are getting the bios splash screen but it is
hanging at a certain point then could be ram or some pci device.

The motherboard could be it but it probably wouldn't be spinning up all
the hard drives.

Until you can get hold of an other video card to put in there to confirm
them you likely be grasping at straws.

Once you get the video card. Do this.

make sure the machine is powered off and unplugged! Had to say it :)
reset cmos and plug system in and boot. If still nothing then do these
steps and try to boot after doing each one.
Remove any hard drive connections from motherboard
remove any cards from PCI slots
check the 2 power connectors from the power supply re-seat them.
remove all but one stick of ram (usually the one closest to the CPU is
the first one)
Try each stick on the first slot to see if there may be a bad stick

If none of this works then it is power supply and/or motherboard. It is
very rare for a CPU to die even with power supply melt downs.
Motherboards are designed to die before the meltdown gets to the CPU.
The only thing I see that kills CPUs is heat.

If you reset the CMOS as part of the testing make sure you DO NOT boot
in to windows before going into the CMOS and setting the correct date.
If your on XP it can cause you have to reauthorize the OS or if you are
using some plug ins they may get messed up the same way.
