I caught the spelling goof, too.... but I am at the other end of the
spectrum. I appreciate the skill, the melody and the hours he had to have
put in to get there for both. I know, for example, that not only does he
flame the neck, but in unison and in harmony with their equally skilled
keyboard player. Yeah, dude is reeeeal proficient, but also has melody.
Hey, it's prog rock.... if he was Johnny Marr, no one would watch/care.

Oh, don't get me wrong Aaron. I love Petrucci, and Satch, and Vai, and
Morse, etc. and they all play very melodically. I'm in awe of their speed
and would give my right arm to be able to play that fast. Of course, I'd
then have to pick with my teeth, but I digress. ;>) Speed is great and like
I said, I always get a big grin when I hear those guys shred. I guess what
I'm saying is that the nature of playing super fast doesn't lend itself to
relating deep emotion. It feels kind of one dimensional to me. Impressive to
be sure, but the only emotion I feel is awe, and possibly jealousy. Ok,
definitely jealousy!
It's funny though that Sarah mentioned David Gilmour in her next post,
because that's who I was thinking of when I made the "three notes and make
me cry" statement.
Anyway, I just wanted you to know I respect those guys greatly. They just
haven't made me cry yet. =>)
Tony
PS - The G3 in Tokyo DVD with Petrucci is killer. As are they all.

Anyway... I vaguely remember the 'anti-guitarist' comments, at least I think
I do. I'm 80% sure what he was saying is that he is in no way a guitarists
guitarist, and he knows it.
I think it was about an approach based on doing things in non-intuitive ways,
or doing things in ways other guitarists don't, can't or won't - thus the
anti guitarists.
IMO a lot of his style is based on weirded out rockabilly licks, but hey
that's just me :-)
Also, I can't say enough about his playing on David Byrnes Nothing But Flowers
:-)

That's pretty much my take on it. As a technical dude there's nothing there.
As a musician I get it. Thus my comment earlier of nothing to see.

We are similar in that way, he and I, ironically. I've moved ahead though
into speed licks and blaze techniques in some ways, however being completely
self taught my methods are not normal, therefore I do things other 'learned'
players wouldn't, and vice versa. Added to that I'm a drummer, and think in
those terms of poly rhythmic and tonal techiniques makes me an off the
normal path player.

Haven't heard it. Obviously, I should give it a run.
