It may not really be too much of a big deal, but one thing I hate about
Cubase is that I can't seem to find a way to save a template that has the
I/O named according to the way the ASIO drivers configure them when working
at 44.1/48k and another one set up solely for 88.2/96k. Maybe I'm missing
something here, but right now I've got the I/O labelled in Cubase so that
when, say, a certain numbered input is for one of my D/A's at 88.2 but
correlates to one of the ADAT returns from my slave DAW at 44.1, I can
recognize it by naming it something like In8/Slave 16 or something like
that.

What I want to be able to do is open up a project at 88.2 and all of the I/O
are named according to what they are interfacing with, with no double names.
Same thing at 44.1. the only way I can see to do this would be to have dual
boot OS drives on both my master and slave machines.

What I would like to be able to do is take Acronis True Image and clone both
my Master and Slave HD's to two separate drives, as safety copies, just in
case, and then use some sort of disk utility to create a new partition on
each of the original drives, then use True Image to clone the disk image to
the new partition on each of the drives. That way I could have an 88.2
partition and a 44.1 partition, each with a template of Cubase set up to
work at whatever sample rates I need to use, and each template will have the
Cubase I/O named correctly.

This also sounds like something I could **** up about as bad as a soup
sandwich.

Deej, you know you can re-name you i/o's, right? What if you
just created a 44.1k template & named all the i/o's according
to their sources & destinations, save it, and THEN change the
samplerate to 88.2k, refresh your i/o's (which will cause half
of your lightpipe i/o's to disappear) then rename as necessary,
& save that as your 88.2k template... no need for none o' 'dat
dual-boot/dual-partition/dual-sized-headache garbage.

Neil,

I'm dealing with a MADI system here. On the Multiface, yes, half the =
ADAT I/O disappears, but this is also the case with a MADI system =
because it's all ADAT I/O. When 8 x I/O on my Multiface plus the 64 I/O =
on the MADI system (32 of which are connected to a pair of AD/DA =
converters) are reconfigured between the two sample rates, there is a =
hell of a bunch of confusion with the naming of ports. On a MADI system. =
my ADAT 1-32 is connected to a pair of ADI 8-DS AD/DA converters. In =
44.1K mode, I/O #'s 9-16 and 25-32 are not even being used because they =
are connected to the 8 Aux ports of the ADI 8-DS units which are not =
running at double speed, but in 88.2 mode, they are being used. My =
system configures itself as follows:

MF A 1 - 8 =3D AD/DA I/O 1-8

MF SPDIF L & R input =3Dreturn from HDSP 9652, output to DAC-1

MF ADAT 1-4 inputs =3D return 1-4 from HDSP 9652 slave at 44.1 and 88.2

MF ADAT 5-8 inputs =3D return 5-8 from HDSP 9652 slave at 44.1 only

MADI 1-8 =3D AD/DA I/O 9-16 at both 44.1 and 88.2

MADI 9-16=3Dopen at 44.1 but correlate to analog 1/0 17-24 at 88.2

MADI 17-24 =3D AD/DA 17-24 at 44.1 but correlate to HDSP 9652 ADAT slave =
returns 5-8 at 88.2

MADI 25-32 =3D open at 44.1 but correlate to HDSP 9652 ADAT slave =
returns 9-16 at 88.2

MADI 33-40=3DAD/DA 17-24 at 44.1

MADI 41-64=3Dreturns from HDSP 9652 ADAT slave at 44.1

This creates a less than elegant scenario for the naming of the ports =
and even more suckage when assigning them and reassigning them from =
project to project.........and even more suckage when assigning names of =
ports to the analog I/O for external hardware and the saving of same as =
favorites.=20

If I had two separate drive images, things would be a lot less cluttered =
and much easier to configure/reconfigure and it would only take as much =
time as it takes to reboot the computer.

Much of this idiocy is due to Cubase not allowing the saving of =
templates for port configurations......or if it does I can't find where =
it allows this.

The Neve box there yet?

OK, i think i kinda see where you're going, but I think you're
still going to have the following problem: when you boot up,
let's say your 44.1k image - if you have your clock set to 44.1k
it's STILL going to only display half of your lightpipe i/o's
until you re-clock... really I think all you have to do is to
make sure you're clocked at your chosen samplerate as you boot
up, and then you can open the appropriate template & the i/o's
should be correct.

The i/o configurations all save with the project, as long as
your clock matches the samplerate of the project that you're
opening... unless i'm somehow not understanding your meaning.

Hmmmm......OK then............you're saying the port names that are named in
the device manager can be saved with a project template?

I haven't been able to accomplish this. Maybe it's because I'm not setting
my sample rate in a correct sequence of events?

OK, look, here's the way you do it... if you go to the topbar
menu & select: Devices/VST Connections & select
either the "Inputs" or "Outputs" tab, you'll se a little teeny
black window in the upper area that says "presets"; it has
several stock presets that you can load using the drop-down
arrow on the right-hand side of that, but what you want to do
is note the little - even teensier - folder icon with the plus
sign, just to the right of the little presets windowette...
THAT's how you save your i/o preset templates.

Make one for 88.2k first, ensuring that your clock is set to
88.2 so you see all the lightpipe ports, name everything the
way you want on the Input side (tab), then click the little
folder icon with the plus sign in it, and save it as: "88k
Insies" or whatever makes sense to you, then go over to the
Output tab & name everything the way you want, repeat the
folder icon save procedure & name it "88k Outsies" or what have
you... THEN reclock to 44.1k. At this point, of course, your
lightpipe i/o's will collapse down & you can refresh the i/o's
under "Devices/Device Setup", then look down the list for VST
inputs & VST outputs - go to each one & hit "reset". (in fact,
you may want to do this even before you do the 88.2k i/o
template - i keep forgetting you're not exclusively on 88.2, so
you may have to reset/refresh before you start, just to make
sure you're seeing all of them).

OK, once you've done that at 44.1k, start naming your i/o's for
the 44.1k versions of what you just saved, as described
above... then save one for the Input side & one under the
output tab, each with it's own name, appropriately.

And there you have it!!!!!!!!! No muss, no fuss, no dual-
partitioning needed. ALl you'll have to make sure you do is to
refresh your VST connections each time you go between a 44.1k
project & an 88.2k one, then pull up the your saved i/o
templates!

Hey Neil,

I get what you're saying and I do use the presets, but what I'm talking =
about is completely different. the following is what I'm unhappy about:

Navigate to:

Devices>Device Setup>VST Audio System>ASIO Hammerfall DSP

On the right is the screen where you choose to enable/disable direct =
monitoring. Below that is where the I/O ports are shown. the port system =
name is shown and to it's right you can name the port in the Show As =
column. The Show As names cannot be saved in an 88.2 template and a =
44.1 template. No matter what template you save, the names in the Show =
As column and any ports you might want to choose to hide because you =
aren't using them in 44.1 mode (MF ADAT ports 4-8 and and MADI ports =
33-64 when using 88.2 and MADI ADAT ports 9-16 and 25 through 32 when =
using 44.1 in my particular situation) will carry over no matter what =
the template/sample rate you save/use. Well, if I'm working at 44.1, =
I've got all these ports showing up that I want to hide because they are =
of no possible use to me, they have double names because some of them =
correlate to totally different ports at 88.2 and they just tend to =
clutter up the I/O configurations that I want to be able to create =
quickly.

Using a dual boot system, one strictly for 44.1 and the other for 88.2 =
would solve this completely....and it's the only way I can see that =
would do this.

Deej, but if you're clocked at 88.2k, those extra ports won't
even show up once you hit "reset" on your VST Inputs & Outputs.
I think this might be the issue in this case... you need to
refresh those i/o's & it'll detect the clockspeed & slice your
ADAT's in half - again, unless I'm just not understanding what
you're trying to accomplish.

No matter whether you refresh or not, the double names will have to be used
and if you hide any unnecessary ports between #'s 1 & 32, in one or the
other config, your physical I/O will not line up properly unless you go back
into the menu and reset them to be shown. It's a royal PITA.
