I can speak for the True Systems Precision 8. I've had
two since I first bout Paris. They are tons of gain, quiet
and pristine sounding. I bought them as a cost effective
Grace solution ($2,600/per in 1999). I've always loved their
sound but go to the Neves, Teles for character. One channel
has a phantom power problem and I've heard there's a flaw
in the design to cause this. Other than that, these babies are
all that I hoped for. Sometimes when recording hard hitters,
they are too hot at the output and it forces me to throw a quality=20
comp on the back side to lower its level when recording drums.=20
8 great pres for relatively short money, great metering and built
in M/S encoding. Cool product that seems to have become a=20
staple pre.

If I had to buy one quality utility pre it would probably be=20
the True 8. However, if I had nothing but cash falling out=20
of my jeans, I would most likely go for 2 - RED 1 instead.=20
The again, 8 Liquid channels would be nice too... ;-)

Well, since I'm spending your hard earned money:

Holler for Don C's recommendation on bona fides for this bad boy.
I'll be smiling when I get just one :)

I just spent some time working with a new Portico and it should also be on
your list to consider. Very big sound and a great value for the $$$. I hate
wall-warts, but I think I will make an exception for this baby.

I've got the Red 8 (2-ch baby brother to the Red 1), and I like
it a lot... it's not what I'd call transparent, though; it's
got some coloration, but to me it seems to be mostly way up
the "air band". If you try one, fair warning: you probably
won't like it with your C-1 or any other mics of that ilk. On
my TLM-103, for example (which doesn't even have as big of a
bump as the C-1), it sounds a bit harsh, but with my Kiwi, or
modded M-147, and certain dynamics, it sounds really nice.
I've also got the 428, and that one - IMO - is pretty
transparent. It's also very flexible, though, so you can indeed
dial in some color if you want (it's got four different
impedance settings, for example... Low, ISA110, Med & High).
Deej, this one is definitely worth checking out in terms of
bang-for-the-buck. I'd say it has a bit of a "softer" sound
than the Red 8... maybe less edge or something like that.
BTW, more about the Red 8 - I think I remember you saying you
you have a Red7, yes? From what I've understand, the -7 (using
the preamp only, no comp or EQ) does not sound exactly like
the -1's or -8's, so I don't know if you can use yours as a
guideline for what you'd get tone-wise. In any event, a couple
of months ago, in preparation for a recording session (one that
never went down, but that's another story), I had the guitarist
bring his rig over & audition some mics & pres. I set up four
mics at first & tracked 'em all simultaneously (to different
tracks, of course, so we could a/b them) while he played;
had him pick his favorite two sounds, then started swapping out
mics & pres so we could compare the other options to his
original favorite two. The mics & pres were:
SM-57
B.L.U.E. Ball
Senn. e609 Silver
Audix D1
Audix i5
Grace 101's (2)
Avalon 737sm
Mucusrite ISA 428
Mucusrite RED 8
Chandler TG-2
His favorite by a long shot ended up being the Audix i5 through
the Focusrite Red; next favorite was the Ball through the Red.
His least favorite was the sm-57 through anything.
Now, this was your typical modern-metal ESP guitar with EMG
humbuckers played through a Mesa Triple Rectumfryer rig, but I
found it interesting that the Red won out. For this tone, the
Avalon & Chandler came across pretty well, too, but the Red
sounded much better to him (and frankly, to me, too) - again,
for this particular tone, anyway. I still have some of the
files from that test so if anyone wants, I can assemble & post
an mp3 file of some clips if anyone wants to hear the
differences.
Neilso i took a chill pill but it's started to wear off... it's been over two
weeks and still no no limit or response from chuck. the last e-mails I sent
(to paypal@greatidea.com, cduffy@ideacorporation.com) were bounced back.
any ideas (see below)? he's probably on holiday (and I'm just jealous!).

Quick update.
Over the weekend I began reinstalling. Twice so far it has BSOD'd on me,
which is a real worry. Once when I was installing XP SP1, and another time
while I was downloading SP2.
Of course the real test will be whether it runs nicely once all this stuff
is loaded. I haven't, for example, loaded all the latest drivers on the MB
yet, and have only just flashed the BIOS to the latest. And it's still using
some default Windows VGA-ish video drivers, so it's still possible that it
will run nicely once I get all that stuff done. I'll hopefully get all that
finished tonight.
In any case I'm pretty sure that if it's not a driver/update issue that it
will be some form of actual hardware fault. We'll see.
Cheers,
Kim.HI Kim,

GrahamSpotted this ( http://news.parisnewsgroup.com/cgi-bin/dnewsweb?cmd=article& amp;group=IDEA.EMUEnsoniqPARIS&item=127221&utag=
- about FX presets not saving when re-opening Paris on XP) on the Paris newsgroup
from about 18 months ago. Now that I've migrated to XP I'm having the same
problem, and was wondering if anyone (Manic?) found a way to solve it.
Since I've now lost a bunch of my presets, I'm also keen to get hold of some
new ones. It'd be great if you got any tasty ones to share - I know Mike
Audet has set up a sharing resource for Paris presents, and could forward
them on to him if you'd like. I've also collected the reverb presets from
the group over the years and could post them as a ppj if anyone's interested.
Many thanks in advance for any assistance.
Best wishes,
DanielI think I've made some progress.
I tried to continue installing tonight, and everything went to poop. It BSOD'd
about three times while I tried to install SP2, and the final time it would
no longer boot because of a claimed disk read error, so I started again...
fresh format...
This time I had all the updates ready on the HDD before I started. I ran
through SP1 and SP2... no probs, then loaded the latest NVIDIA graphics
drivers, and then the MB drivers. Now, the first time it crashed when loading
the MB drivers, but I tried again (with IE closed) and it went through fine.
Since then it hasn't crashed once. I've installed EDS drivers, Paris and
the effects subsystem and it seems to be running ok. I've installed all the
high priority Windows Updates, and am now onto the others. There's one hardware
driver in there though and I'm not sure about that... think I'd rather
NVIDIA's driver than MS's.
Point is though it seems a lot more stable now that the latest MB drivers
are on, so I suspect that was the issue.
I don't know how much more I'll get done tonight, but I'll progress further
during the week and keep you both posted. Fingers crossed it might be coming
good. :o)
Cheers,
Kim.Hi Daniel,
I'd actually forgot about the preset sharing site I set up. No one took
me up on it. But, feel free to send me stuff, because I'd love to get it
going.
All the best,
Mike

I had a Sytek and loved it. Definitly the best bang for buck preamp out
there. I sold it and got a four channel GML. Can't recommend it enough....I wonder if you ever tried a AD500 Apogee (not the AD1000) with
softlimit , with Paris , would that be -TODAY- an upgrade over the stock
Paris converters ?
I still only record at 16 bits...

-volthauseNo worries. Thanks Chuck. Sorry for the stress - was a bit worries you'd disappeared
(holiday perhaps!).
Much appreciated,

check out a Millennia pre amp. I have an STT-1 that i love for
clean, and both the compressor and Eq are very nice.
They also make a 4 channel pre amp.
If you can demo one, i would include it in the test.

If you want to find a document in XP, there's a search link in the start
menu. Once the keywords are entered, a cartoon character -- a dog, by
default -- does a little dance while the hard drive is scoured. Results
appear in seconds and they include not just text documents but pictures,
e-mails and any other type of file.
A mini search box also appears in the upper right corner of every window, so
it's no longer necessary to return to the Start menu. As well, searches can
be saved as a virtual folder. When opened, such a folder will retrieve any
documents that meet the saved criteria. Files also can have keywords
attached something that will make nontext items easier to find if the time
is taken to enter descriptive words.
Mac fans are probably screaming. Yes, this is very similar to the Spotlight
function in the recent update of Mac OS X. At this stage of development,
Vista does bear a significant resemblance. .......
Windows XP has had that from day 1....I wonder if this guy has ever used XP?
