All,

I am in the middle of making my studio console and am
building a sound proof computer compartment into it.
I was wondering where I can purchase the foam that needs to line
the enclosure. I need something about 1/4 inch thick for the
ventalation maze, but something thicker could go in the main
compartment.

OH yeah.... Cheap please...

Thx

Keep in mind that foam insulation = heat retention.

Why not use 1/2" foam carpet underlay?

This is the concept I am following.
My intake is different, but the exhaust is very simular.

Dave, that stuff has no noise-suppressive qualitites - it's
just small pieces of scrap foam barely held together with one
another.

Brandon, try a craft store for foam rubber, like Hobby Lobby or
the equivalent type of store in your area. If you can't find
raw foam, look for something like plain table placemats with a
foam rubber backing & you can just cut 'em to size (made plain
so you can paint your own designs on them... you know, the
typical crafts store kind of base materials) my ex mom-in-law
was into that sort of thing, so I know they carry materials of
that nature. I also noticed one time that they have polished
brass tubing of a size & thickness suitable to make an LDC tube
mic body out of, so maybe one day....! lol

Mind what Deej said about the heat, though. Hope that vent maze
allows enough air flow.

HI Brandon,
Are you talking about putting the foam inside a computer case? Or
putting foam inside a rack that the computer is going into?

True, but closed cell foam rubber won't have much either... In a
pinch, a person could probably use short pile carpet for a similar effect.

Carpet pad or thin business loop carpet. Maybe thin acoustic tile, but I
don't know what would be better. I would think that any thing that is too
ruff, will cause wind turbulence and more noise. Time for an experiment!

I would look at all the studio treatment products first, to see if there
is a product that would be best for this kind of application.

Have you looked at car door damping panels?

The foam rubber is what was used in the example and probably what I will use
for the exhaust maze.
The other foam is going to go in a rack enclosure that houses the computer
cases. I will have two computers in this iso box and I will remove both sides
of the cases or pretty much all the un-needed computer case housing. I was
considering placing a power supply on the iso box just to power the fans.
Is there a good candidate for this purpose. A PS that won't add too much
noise ad heat which will defeat its purpose? Any suggestions?

thx

Get a small Antec with a built-in fan - reliable brand & quiet
fans. I have a spare 350-watter if you need it, I'll let you
have it for 50 bucks including shipping, but if you scrounge
around a bit in your area you might be able to find the same
kinda thing for the same price or maybe even less & not have to
wait for it to be sent. If you can go lower power than that,
then do it - it'll generate less heat. If you can find an older
250 or 300-watt one with a built-in fan, go for it; you can
probably pick one of those up for 20 bucks at a Computer
Renaissance - or the equivalent - in your area.

Speaking of foam.
Anyone know where to get the heavy dark gray foam used in mic cases and custom
camera and instrumentation cases?

Marketek have that perhaps? I do not know to be honest, just tossing out a
maybe. Also try MCM Electronics. You might also be able to call Shure (or a
rep if you know one personally) as they no doubt use a lot of it for their
cases and find out where they source from.

Brandon, Looking at the drawing I was curious about something: do the
sides of the box open up? If it were mine I would make sure I had fast
access to the guts of the computer. Personally I have always kept mine
in closets.

Also, whatever you use for the foam, remeber there will b a lot of dust
building up over time, so use something that will not trap it or hold it.

No the sides do not open.
I will might actually have two comps side by side in the case which will
leave no room for getting in and out quickly. I was going to put my audio
comp and my internet comp in there, but to reduce heat build up I should
only put the audio comp in there. I don't usually surf the internet while
I am recording anyway.
However, I do use a KVM switcher and will have to get some extensions to
make that work. That will leave room to get in and out.
Also, I am very concerned about dust build up on the insulation.
I guess regular maintenance will be required.

thx,
b

Would there be any benefit to making a plexiglass door?
Cosmetically I would like to put a wooden door, but thought
I should ask if there was something I am over looking. I got those cool glow
led fans that I wont be able to see. Other than that I can't think of a reason
to go thru the trouble of a plexiglass door. Will plexigalss disipate heat
better than the wooden door?
thx,
b

Hey Gene!

try the container store or equivalent. They had a container store at Sun
Coast Mall in Orange county CA., I remember seeing aluminum, mic sized cases,
aluminum briefcases and larger aluminum cases that had the pre cubed foam
in them. they were all under $20.00. You Just rip out the foam to fit
what you need.

Most cities have an upholstery supply house that has all kinds of foam, plastic
and vinyl covering. Here in Michigan we have a place called Foam Factory
586 795-3626 They will cut to size and thickness. They even have a cutting
machine that will take a sheet of foam and cut it down the middle in that
diamond or wedge pattern they use for acoustic panels for studios.

I picked up one of these:
http://tinyurl.com/efcbf
Which fits my larger than normal camcorder perfect. (Sony wants $400.00 for
a similar but lined case.)
I checked two local upholstery supply houses, but they only had soft foam
rubber, which will not protect the camera like the dark gray dense foam.
The case only has room for 1” foam all around so the normal case lining foam
would be perfect if I can find a modest amount (24X24X1).
Thanks for the input.

Gene, I don't know if this will work for you, or not. Home Depot has hard
dense foam rubber flooring that fits together like square puzzle peaces.
People use it for children's play areas in a basement or around a work bench.
You could layer this and kind of die cut this to fit.

Gene,

I just bought some 24"X96"x1" foam from Walmart.
It is just a long sheet of foam that yopu can cut to desired size. It is
much like a mattress pad cover that you see.
It's not quite as heavy duty, but should do the trick for what you want.
It was only apprx. $12 for 24"X96"x1".
It's over by the fabrics department.

Unfortunately, the case is already built and that is not an option.
I am just going to put my audio comp in the enclosure so I will be able to
get to it no problem. I will pull the door off of the case and lay it on
its side so the heat raises straight up from the MB. I bought some case fans
that I will be installing in the enclosure with there own power supply. I
will be using 1"thick standard foam for the inside of the enclosure and the
exhaust maze.

The biggest caveat or potential danger with common store bought
foams to be used as sound attenuation

- Fire -

You need to think about fire retardant spray or treatment, whether
on you walls or inside a closed box.

El Miguel
