Dark... that's what I thought, but didn't want to prompt the
answer by saying so... see if you can get ahold of a Focusrite
Red series preamp & try that with the 4060... see if you like
that combo. You'll put some edge on that puppy, fer sure, and
still retain the fullness. Seriously, try one with that mic if
you can.
Another option for that mic might be a Chandler TG2... warm &
Neve-ish, but with a better high-end than your typical classic
Neve sound... not quite hyped, but more extended & defined,
maybe - is the way I'd describe it. Although if that mic is
already pretty warm-sounding, that combination might prove too
much in that department... might come across as a big "bump" in
the low-mids.
Now, if you just hate the mic overall, but want something to
match up nicely with the Great River, I'm sure you can find
lots of options, depending on your price range... good ol' u-87
never totally sucks (except can be midrange-honk-y on male vox
sometimes, if yaknowhutahmean); TLM-103... warmth of the GR
should help take some of the edge off; and the Baby Bottle
totally ROCKS on male vox, and would (IME) pair well with the
somewhat Neve-ishness of the Great River - I've used a Baby
Bottle through a Neve 1073 & an original LA-2A and it killed on
male (hard rock/metal) vocals.
Another option, since you're looking for a way out of "dark"
territory might be the Blueberry... a totally underrated mic,
IMO, and the top end sounds to my ears almost exactly like a
C-12, while the bottom end/low mids are definitely a bit rolled
off compared to that particular mic... couple that with the
Great River warmth, and you might be happy.
If you want to try a Baby Bottle, and/or a Blueberry, I'd
consider lending you one of each of mine in exchange for you
lending me the 4060 for awhile... I'd be curious to see how the
4060 sounded through My Chandler TG2. We'd have to agree on a
set amount of time for the mics to be away, and each agree to
pay shipping to & from on each end so it'd be fair, but I'm
always interested in trying new combinations that might serve
to enlighten, so let me know if that might be an option you
want to consider.
Honestly, though, I think your best & easiest bet might be to
grab a Muscusrite Red Series & try that 4060 out through that
& see what you think.

This sounds like an option. Where are you located. I'm in Milwaukee. Any
other Parisians in this area.

I'm in El paso, West Texas. I'm guessing safe & reasonably
rapid shipping would be anywhere from 15 to 30 bucks each way
if you want to swap mics temporarily, if that's what you're
alluding to. The more I think about it, though, from what I've
heard about the 4060, the more I think you'll like the
Mucusrite Red for that mic... are there any dealers in
your area you could check one out through?
