One 80G and the other is 200G. both are totally hosed, right out of the
chute. Unbelievable!

I had two 40gb Maxtors die this year, but they were 6 years old. I've got
a new Seagate 80gb that's dead -- won't successfully format! The are no
guarantees... I have been liking the 160gb Western Digitals (SE)... they
don't get as hot as the Seagates and are pretty quiet. I'm sure they'll
die for someone else, though!

So how far are we from solid state hard drive replacements?

I am off Maxtors after two 80gb drives froze up. Checked out
http://www.storagereview.com/news/news.html and got some Seagates. No
problems -yet.
